Now that Galena Park defensive end Trumaine
Johnson has committed to LSU, college recruiters
are after wide-out Johnny Sampy – the other
Division I Yellow Jacket prospect.
Sampy has recovered nicely from a knee injury that
he suffered less than a year ago, and is drawing
interest from the likes of Missouri, Arizona, Tulsa,
Iowa State and TCU.
“The recruiting process is going better than I
thought because of the knee injury,” Sampy said.
“It’s been fun and some schools are talking about
offers as I talk about official visits.”
Sampy (6-3, 225-pounds) is projected as anything
from linebacker to tight end to receiver.
“He’s a great athlete and can play a number of different positions,” head coach Mike Coker
said. “He can really lay the wood to people on defense. I gave him four carries in our last
game at running back and he ran for three touchdowns.”
Galena Park (7-3) enjoyed their most successful season since 1975, but the Yellow Jackets
didn’t reach the playoffs.
“Our success has a lot to do with those two guys and we hate to see them go,” Coker
said.
