Galena Park Baseball Game Update - Post Season Honors

The Galena Park Baseball program brought to a close a very successful season that fell just short of the post season.  Along with the team’s stellar performance, Galena Park also had several young men earn All-District Honors for the 2017 season.

Galena Park Baseball Game Update - Manvel

The Galena Park JV team jumps out to an early lead in a victory over Manvel and the varsity team pulled out a back-and-forth affair at Manvel.

 

JV Team:
The JV team grabbed an early lead on its way to a 12-1 victory over Manvel on Friday, April 28th.  The Yellowjackets captured the lead in the first inning when Alex Gomez singled on a 1-1 count scoring a run.  The first inning ended with a 3-0 Yellowjacket advantage.  Another four runs were added in the second inning and the Jackets added five more runs in the third inning thanks to hitting of Pedro Hernandez and Isaiah Hernandez as well as a triple by Trinidad Gallo and a single by Arnulfo Garcia.  Jonathon Sunday earned the win throwing three innings, giving up one run, one hit, and striking out two.  Arnulfo Garcia recorded the last six outs to earn the save.  Trinidad Gallo led at the plate batting 1 for 2 and earning 4 RBIs.


Varsity Team:
The Yellowjackets battled in an inning for inning contest on Friday, April 28th against Manvel High School.  The score remained tight until the top of the sixth inning when the Jackets took and held a 9-2 lead as they defeated Manvel.  The Jackets were down 2-1 as the sixth inning began but a scoring run started on a ground out RBI by Carlos Calvillo followed by a double by Joshua Perez, a single by Francisco Perez, a double by Aaron Rodriguez, and a single by William Hernandez.  Carlos Calvillo earned the win throwing five innings, surrendering two runs, five hits, and striking out two.  The Jackets had ten hits in the game.  Aaron Rodriguez and Joshua Perez each collected multiple hits and each drove in two runs.

 

 

Galena Park Baseball Game Update - Shadow Creek

Galena Park HS JV Yellow Jackets Defeats Shadow Creek, 5-4 Big Sixth Inning Gives Yellow Jackets Win Over Shadow Creek


JV Team:
The Galena Park JV baseball team brought home the 5-4 victory over Shadow Creek Monday, April 24th.  It was a back-and-forth matchup as each team traded runs early in the second inning.  The Yellowjackets took the lead in the third with a two-run inning and managed to hold off the Sharks in the fifth to scrape out the 5-4 win.  Trinidad Gallo scored the two runs in the third off his ground out and Alex Gomez’ double scored two more runs in the fifth.  Gilberto Rios earned the win pitching four and a third innings, allowing four runs, four hits, striking out eight, and walking one. Jonathon Sunday recorded the last two outs to earn the save for the Jackets. Alex Gomez and Trinidad Gallo each drove in two runs to lead the Jackets at the plate.


Varsity Team:

It was senior night at Galena Park’s baseball field this last Tuesday and the Yellowjackets recognized Joshua Perez, Jeremy Valdez, Roberto Loera, and Francisco Perez for their hard work and dedication to the Yellowjacket program.  The Yellowjackets managed to string together an eight-run sixth inning that led to a 13-2 victory over the Sharks of Shadow Creek High School.  Some of the scoring came from senior, Jeremy Valdez who scored three runs on a home run, a double by Carlos Calvillo scored another run, and William Hernandez capped off the inning with another three run home run.  The Yellowjackets took an early first inning lead on a single by Francisco Perez and added three more runs in the second when Mauricio Martinez and Kasen Handal each tallied a single. Francisco Perez earned the win throwing three innings, allowing one run, two hits, striking out two, and walking one. Joshua Perez recorded the last nine outs to earn the save for the Yellowjackets.  Galena Park had 15 hits in the game. Joshua Perez, Francisco Perez, Kasen Handal, William Hernandez, Carlos Calvillo, and Jeremy Valdez each collected multiple hits for the Jackets, and Valdez and Hernandez each drove in three runs to lead the team.

 

 

Galena Park Baseball Game Update - Fort Bend

Varsity Team:
A fourth inning that ended with ten Yellowjacket runs rocketed the Jackets to a dominating 14-2 victory over Fort Bend Willowridge this last Friday.  The big inning was thanks to multiple errors and walks by Willowbrook and two well-placed singles by Joshua Perez and Kasen Handal.  Carlos Calvillo earned the win for the Jackets throwing three innings, allowing zero runs, zero hits, striking out seven, and walking zero. Francisco Perez and Alec Gonzalez each threw one inning, as the two relievers helped finish off the victory.  Mauricio Martinez, Carlos Calvillo, Albert Rodriguez, Joshua Perez, William Hernandez, and Kasen Handal all had one hit to lead the Yellowjackets.

 

 

Galena Park Baseball Game Update - Santa Fe

The JV team fell in a back-and-forth affair against Santa Fe this last Thursday while the varsity team struggled to find any offense as they lost to Santa Fe.


JV Team:
The JV team battled in a tight contest against the Indians of Santa Fe but ended up on the short end of a 5-2 score on Thursday, April 13th.  The game was tied at two with Santa Fe batting in the bottom of the sixth when Jonathon Sunday induced a ground out, but two runs scored and Santa Fe had the lead.  Jonathon Sunday took the loss for G.P. after six innings of work, surrendering five runs, five hits, and striking out four.  Alex Gomez and Juan Castillo each earned an RBI to the Jackets.


Varsity Team:
Santa Fe came to Galena Park and took control early and never allowing the Yellowjackets to find any sort of groove.  The Santa Fe pitcher ensured that the only exercise the Jacket batters would get was a jog from the plate back to the dugout for the majority of the game.  Francisco Perez and Jeremy Valdez did find holes and manage to ding Santa Fe’s stellar defensive performance.  Carlos Calvillo took the loss tossing five and two-thirds innings, surrendering five runs, ten hits, striking out six, and walking one.

The varsity team will be traveling to Willowridge Friday, April 21st while the JV team will host Willowridge at Galena Park.  The varsity game will start at 7:00 pm and the JV team will start at 5:00 pm.

 

 

Galena Park Baseball Game Update - Texas City

The Galena Park varsity team traveled to Texas City last Wednesday, April 12th to take on the Stingarees.  The Yellowjackets were victorious in the first meeting after some stellar pitching led to a 1-0 victory, but this day would not be so joyous.


JV Team:
The JV team’s game was cancelled due to weather.


Varsity Team:
Texas City controlled this game early with a home run in the second inning followed by another five runs, four of which came off a grand slam, in the third.  The Yellowjackets once again out hit their opponent but the hits Texas City did manage where lethal blows.  Joshua Perez took the loss for the Yellowjackets throwing two and a third innings, surrendering six runs, three hits, and striking out one.  Roberto Loera led the team with one run batted in and went 1 for 3 on the day.

 

 

Galena Park Baseball Game Update - Galveston Ball

For the second time this season the JV team pitches a shut-out against the Galveston Ball Tors while the varsity team trips themselves up in a loss to Ball.


JV Team:
Gilberto Rios didn't allow a single run as Galena Park defeated Galveston Ball 13-0 on Saturday, April 8th.  Rios allowed just five hits and induced a fly out to end the game.  The Yellowjackets scored five runs in the seventh inning in which Raymundo Brosig, Julian Lopez and Gilberto Rios each managed a single. Gilberto Rios earned the win pitching seven innings, surrendering zero runs, five hits, striking out three, and walking one.  The Jackets had 13 hits in the game; Pedro Hernandez, Gilberto Rios, and Julian Lopez each collected multiple hits for the team. Juan Castillo led G.P. with four runs batted in and he was 1 for 3 on the day.  The team was sure-handed and didn't commit a single error and Castillo led the team with the most plays of six.


Varsity Team:

The Yellowjackets watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in a 5-2 loss to Galveston Ball on Saturday, April 8th.  The Tors took the 1-0 lead on a groundout in the second inning, added another run in the third and shoved the dagger in deep with a three run seventh inning.  The Yellowjackets out hit Ball but mental mistakes and some sloppy play put the Yellowjackets at a disadvantage as Ball played an error free game.  Francisco Perez took the loss for Yellowjackets throwing three innings, allowing two runs, three hits, striking out two, and walking one.  Kasen Handal and Carlos Calvillo led the Yellowjackets with two hits each.

 

 

Galena Park Baseball Game Update - Fort Bend Elkins

Both the JV and the varsity teams grabbed early leads as they added another victory to their district totals.


JV Team:
The JV team defeated Fort Bend Elkins 5-3 thanks to a strong start.  The Yellowjackets started with three runs in the first after the Elkins pitcher loaded the bases on walks and walked in three runs.  Galena Park added another run in the second inning and one in the fifth inning as they held off Elkins in a 5-3 win.  Jonathon Sunday earned the win pitching six and two-thirds innings, giving up three runs, three hits, striking out six, and walking one.  Jonathon Sunday, Pedro Hernandez, and Trinidad Gallo each managed one hit to lead the team.


Varsity Team:

The Galena Park Yellowjackets grabbed an early lead in their 8-1 victory over Fort Bend Elkins on Friday, April 7th.  The Jackets scored three runs in the second inning and secured the victory with another five runs in the fourth inning.  The highlight of the fourth inning was the grand slam that scored four by Mauricio Martinez.  Carlos Calvillo earned the win pitching six innings, surrendering one run, three hits, and striking out ten.  The Jackets finished with eight hits; Carlos Calvillo and Roberto Loera each collected multiple hits while Mauricio Martinez led the team with four RBI’s and he was 1-for-2 on the day.

 

 

Galena Park Baseball Game Update - Manvel

The Galena JV team jumps out to an early lead in a victory over Manvel while the varsity loses in a late scoring run.


JV Team:
The Yellowjacket JV team grabbed an early lead in their 13-4 victory over Manvel on Friday. Galena Park scored on a single by Isaiah Hernandez in the first inning, a groundout in the second inning, a double by Pedro Hernandez in the second inning, a double by Julian Lopez in the second inning, and on three errors in the second inning.  Jonathon Sunday earned the win for G.P. tossing seven innings, allowing four runs, four hits, striking out two, and walking one. Pedro Hernandez and Isaiah Hernandez each drove in two runs to lead the Yellowjackets.


Varsity Team:
Friday's game against Manvel was a heartbreaker for the Yellowjackets, as they lost the lead late in a 4-0 defeat. The game was tied at zero with Manvel batting in the top of the fifth when a sacrifice fly to drove in a run.  The Yellowjackets put a scare in Manvel during the bottom of the sixth when Mauricio Martinez Martinez got on base and advanced to third with just one out.  Aaron Rodriguez hit a hard grounder that should have ended with a 1-1 tie, but interference was called and both the Aaron and Francisco Perez were called out ending the inning.  The call took the wind out of the Yellowjackets’ wings as they valiantly tried to battle back into the game.  Manvel clenched the game with three runs in the seventh.  Carlos Calvillo took the loss for the Yellowjackets after throwing a phenomenal six innings, giving up two runs, three hits, and striking out seven.  Mauricio Martinez went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Yellow Jackets in hits.

The JV team will travel to Marshall for a 4:00 pm game while the varsity team will be hosting Marshall High School Tuesday, April 4th at 7:00 pm.

 

 

Galena Park Baseball Game Update - Shadow Creek

Both the JV and varsity baseball teams defeated the Shadow Creek Sharks this last Tuesday night.


JV Team:
Gilberto Rios didn't allow a single run as the JV team defeated Shadow Creek 13-0 on Tuesday. Rios earned the win pitching five innings, giving up zero runs, one hit, striking out 11, and walking one.  The Yellowjackets grabbed an early lead scoring on an error, a single by Pedro Hernandez, another error, a walk by Trinidad Gallo, a double by Julian Lopez, another error, a single by Gilberto Rios, a walk by Arnulfo Garcia, a walk by Brandon Rocha, a walk by Eric Guzman, and fourth error in the first inning.  Arnulfo Garcia, Jonathon Sunday, Pedro Hernandez, Julian Lopez, and Gilberto Rios each collected one hit for Galena Park.  The Yellowjackets didn't commit a single error in the field while Michael Gaitan had 11 chances in the field, the most on the team.


Varsity Team:
Kasen Handal collected four hits in four at bats, as the Yellowjackets defeated Shadow Creek 14-2 on Tuesday.  Handal singled in the first, singled twice in the third, and singled in the fifth.  Francisco Perez earned the win for G.P.  He went four and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs, four hits, striking out three, and walking one.  The Jackets had ten hits in the game led by Kasen Handal, Jeremy Valdez, and Perez who each collected multiple hits.

The varsity team will be hosting Manvel High School on Friday, March 31st at 7:00 pm and the JV team will be on the road at Manvel for a 5:00 pm start.

 

 

Galena Park Baseball Game Update - Fort Bend

The Galena Park Yellowjackets jumped out to an early lead in a victory over Fort Bend Willowridge.


Varsity Team:
The Yellowjackets started off strong scoring on a single by Kasen Handal, a double by Jeremy Valdez, and a groundout in the first inning.  Six more runs were scored in the third after a home run by Mauricio Martinez, a single by William Hernandez, a single by Cipirano Ayala, and a single by Sergio Rodriguez.  Galena Park finished off Willowridge 13-1.  Carlos Calvillo earned the win for the Jackets throwing five innings, allowing one run, three hits, striking out 12, and walking zero.  The Yellowjackets collected 13 hits led by Carlos Calvillo and Kasen Handal who each collected multiple hits while Jeremy Valdez went 1-for-1 at the plate and led the team with three runs batted in.

The JV team will be hosting Shadow Creek High School Tuesday, March 28th at 5:00 pm.  The varsity will be on the road at Shadow Creek High School for a 7:00 pm start time.

 

 

Galena Park Baseball Game Update - Santa Fe

Galena Park baseball faced off against Santa Fe High School Friday, March 17th; the JV team won in a back-and-forth affair but the varsity team was defeated by Santa Fe.


JV Team:
The JV team defeated Santa Fe 8-6 in a home game on Friday.  Galena Park took an early lead in the second inning when an error scored one.  The game was tied at five with the Yellowjackets batting in the bottom of the sixth when Gilberto Rios singled driving in two runs.  Jonathon Sunday started the game for Galena Park pitching five innings, allowing three runs, four hits, and striking out five.  Pedro Hernandez earned the win tossing one and two-thirds innings, surrendering one run, two hits, and walking one.  Isaiah Hernandez and Trinidad Gallo contributed multiple hits toward the team’s eight. Isaiah Hernandez and Gilberto Rios each drove in two of Galena Park’s eight runs.


Varsity Team:

The varsity team fell behind early and couldn't come back in a 10-2 loss to Santa Fe.  Adam Salinas took the loss for the Yellowjackets tossing three innings, allowing six runs, seven hits, striking out one, and walking zero.  Roberto Loera and Aaron Rodriguez each drove in one run to lead the Jackets.

The varsity team will be traveling to the Island to take on the Tors of Galveston Ball High School Friday, March 10th for a 6:00 p.m. start.  The JV team will host the Tors for a 5:00 p.m. start.

 

 

Galena Park Baseball Game Update - Texas City

The Galena Park JV baseball team jumped out to an early lead in their victory over Texas City while two varsity pitchers team up for a shut out of Texas City.


JV Team:
An early lead helped the JV team defeat Texas City 11-2 on Tuesday, March 14th.  The Yellowjackets scored on a single by Pedro Hernandez in the first inning, on an error in the second inning, on a fielder's choice by Trinidad Gallo in the second inning, on a single by Pedro Hernandez in the second inning, and on a walk by Alex Gomez in the second inning.  All this scoring gave Galena Park an early 6-1 advantage that they added to in the fifth with two runs, the sixth with two runs, and the seventh with one run.  Arnulfo Garcia earned the win for G.P. pitching four innings, allowing one run, three hits, striking out three, and walking one.  Pedro Hernandez recorded the last nine outs to earn the save.  The team collected six hits led by Arnulfo Garcia and Pedro Hernandez who each collected two hits.


Varsity Team:
The varsity team defeated Texas City 1-0 on Wednesday, March 15th as Francisco Perez and Adam Salinas combined to throw a shutout. The game remained 0-0 through the bottom of the third when with two outs Mauricio Martinez reached on an error and stole 2nd base to position himself for a score.   Kasen Handal stepped to the plate and smacked a hard ground ball to left field scoring Martinez before he tallied the final out in a run-down.  The pitching and the defense held off the Stingarees for the remainder of the game giving G.P. the “W”.  Francisco Perez earned the win for the Yellowjackets throwing six and a third innings, allowing zero runs, two hits, and striking out three.  Adam Salinas recorded the last two outs (the final being a strike out) to earn the save for the Jackets.  Carlos Calvillo led Galena Park with two hits in three at bats. The Yellowjackets didn't commit a single error in the field and Roberto Loera led the team with eight chances in the field.

The varsity team will be traveling to Santa Fe on Friday, March 17th for 1:00 p.m. start.  The JV team will host Santa Fe at 11:00 a.m.

 

 

Galena Park Baseball Game Update - Galveston Ball

Sunday throws a shutout in as Galena Park’s JV team defeats Galveston Ball while the varsity team drops their game to Ball after late scoring by the Tors.


JV Team:
Jonathan Sunday didn't allow a single run as the JV team defeated Galveston Ball 10-0 on Friday, March 10th.  Sunday allowed just one hit and induced a fly out to end the game.  The Yellowjackets scored five runs in the fourth inning.  The scoring initiated by a single by Juan Castillo and a stolen base by Alex Gomez.  Jonathon Sunday earned the win pitching six innings, giving up zero runs, one hit, striking out five, and walking one.   Jonathon Sunday, Pedro Hernandez, Alex Gomez, Juan Castillo, and Trinidad Gallo each managed one hit for the Jackets.  The Yellowjackets were sure-handed on the field as they played an error-free game.  Michael Gaitan made the most plays with six.


Varsity Team:
The varisty team was in the game through the fifth inning.  Galena Park went into the bottom of the 6th with a 2-1 lead, but the Tors managed a 3 run inning and sealed the 4-2 on Monday, March 13th.  Carlos Calvillo took the loss for the Yellowjackets throwing five and a third innings, surrendering four runs, seven hits, and striking out one.  Roberto Loera, Joshua Perez, and Aaron Rodriguez each managed one hit to lead Yellowjackets at the plate.

The varsity team will be hosting Texas City on Wednesday, March 15th.

 

 

Galena Park Baseball Game Update - Elkins High School

The varsity baseball team had to relocate their game against Elkins to Elkins High School because the rain-drenched G.P. field just wouldn’t dry out.  The JV team, unfortunately, cancelled their game against Elkins.

 

JV Team:
Didn’t play due to poor field conditions.


Varsity Team:
The Yellowjackets fell behind by four runs early and couldn't come back in a 5-1 loss to Fort Bend Elkins on Wednesday.  The Yellowjackets struggled from the plate until the fourth inning when Carlos Calvillo singled to right field scoring Aaron Rodriguez for Galena Park’s lone run.  Carlos Calvillo and William Hernandez each had one hit to lead the Jackets offense.  Joshua Perez took the loss for G.P. throwing three innings, allowing four runs, five hits, and striking out four.


On Deck:
The varsity team will be traveling to the Island to take on the Tors of Galveston Ball High School Friday, March 10th for a 6:00 p.m. start.  The JV team will host the Tors for a 5:00 p.m. start.

 

 

Galena Park Baseball Game Update - Pasadena ISD Tournament

The Galena Park Varsity baseball competed in the Pasadena ISD tournament March 2nd, 3rd, and 4th.

 

Varsity Team:
On Thursday, March 2nd the Yellowjackets went bat to bat against Houston Heights in a game they watched slip away after Heights took an early lead.  Houston Height jumped to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after some well-placed singles put a runner in scoring position.  Then in the second, Houston Heights scored an additional 2 runs taking a 3-0 lead.  The third inning was a quick inning as each team racked up 3 outs quickly.  It continued to look bleak for G.P. as the fourth inning started with 2 quick outs, but then the Jackets’ bats started making contact.  William Hernandez started the team off with a single to left field, followed by a double by Jeremy Valdez to right field that scored Hernandez.  Adam Salinas rocked another double out to right field that scored Valdez.  With the score 3-2, the remaining innings are a succession of quick outs and very little offense which in the end prevents the Jackets from securing a victory.  Carlos Calvillo took the loss for G.P. pitching six innings, allowing three runs, seven hits, striking out two, and walking one.


The Yellowjackets were back in action Friday morning against Pasadena Memorial.  The Yellowjackets fell to Pasadena Memorial 10-9 on the final play of the game. The game was tied at nine with Pasadena Memorial batting in the bottom of the sixth when the batter singled off of Sergio Rodriguez, driving in one run.  The Yellowjackets collected ten hits with Kasen Handal and Jeremy Valdez collecting multiple hits.  Handal collected four hits; a triple in the first, a double in the second, a single in the fourth, and another single in the sixth.  Francisco Perez started the game for Galena Park throwing for three and a third innings, surrendering five runs, five hits, and striking out six.  Sergio Rodriguez took the loss for the Jackets pitching two innings, giving up five runs, seven hits, and striking out two.


Galena Park took the field against the Texans of Sam Rayburn High School Friday afternoon.  The game was knotted up at 0-0 until the bottom of the second when Rayburn managed to push a run across the plate.  The Yellowjackets countered with a run of their own in the third inning.  Joshua Perez started the inning off with a ground-ball single to right field, a stolen base, and advanced to third after tagging up on Mauricio Martinez’ hit.  The Yellowjackets loaded the bases and William Hernandez singled to center field plating J. Perez and tying the score.  With the game tied 1-1 the Yellowjackets jumped all over the Texans in the fifth inning as they grabbed four more runs.  Joshua Perez started the “hit-a-palooza” with a single to centerfield; then Mauricio Martinez reached on an error by the centerfielder; Kasen Handal singled to left field scoring J. Perez; Francisco Perez rocketed a double to left field scoring Martinez and Handal; and Julian Macias ended the scoring with a ground-ball single to left field that scored F. Perez.  The Jackets went on to defeat Sam Rayburn 5-1.  Adam Salinas earned the win for the Yellowjackets pitching six innings, giving up one run, two hits, and striking out five.  Galena Park collected another ten hits with Kasen Handal and Joshua Perez each collecting three hits.

 

Saturday morning the Yellowjackets faced off against Alief Hastings in a game that ended with 15 hits between the two teams and 22 total runs.  The Yellowjackets started off on fire as they built a 5-0 lead in the first inning.  The comfortable lead proved to be short lived as Alief Hastings answered with an eight run second inning that gave them an 8-5 lead.  G.P. mustered two more runs in the bottom of the second cutting their deficit to a single run.  Then in the fourth Galena Park managed to push three more runs across the plate taking a 10-8 lead.  The Yellowjackets scored another run in the fifth and held off a late charge by Alief taking the 11-10 victory.  Mauricio Martinez started the game for G.P. tossing one and one-third innings, allowing eight runs, and five hits.  Cipriano Ayala earned the win for the Jackets pitching three and two-thirds innings, giving up two runs, two hits, and striking out one.  The boys collected nine hits. Aaron Rodriguez and Francisco Perez each managed two hits to lead the Yellowjackets.

 

 

Galena Park Baseball Game Update - North Shore High School

The Galena Park JV baseball team competed against GPISD sister school, North Shore High School Friday, March 3rd.

 

JV Team:
The Galena Park JV team defeated North Shore 4-3 on Friday thanks to a walk-off single by Isaiah Hernandez with the game tied at three driving in one run and sealing the 4-3 victory.  Despite falling behind early the Yellowjackets evened things up at three in the bottom of the sixth inning setting up the game winning hit.  Arnulfo Garcia started the game for the Jackets handling three innings, surrendering three runs, one hit, and striking out three.  Jonathon Sunday earned the win for G.P. pitching three innings, giving up zero runs, zero hits, and striking out three.  Alex Gomez and Isaiah Hernandez each managed one hit to lead the Yellowjackets at the plate.

 

 

Galena Park Baseball Game Update - Fort Bend Christian Academy

The Galena Park Varsity baseball team played their final game of their tournament against Fort Bend Christian Academy Saturday the 25th.


Varsity Team:

The Yellowjackets defeated Fort Bend Christian Academy 8-0 on Saturday as three pitchers combined to throw a shutout.  Mauricio Martinez earned the win throwing four and two-thirds innings, surrendering zero runs, one hit, striking out three, and walking zero.  Alec Gonzalez and Cipriano Ayala came in as relief in the fifth inning.  Ayala threw one-third of an inning and induced a groundout to finish off the game.  The Yellowjackets loaded the bases with their first three batters setting up Aaron Rodriguez’ ground ball to the shortstop that scored 2 runs on an error.  The score remained 2-0 until Sergio Rodriguez doubled on a fly ball to center field scoring William Hernandez and Julian Macias giving G.P. a 4-0 lead.  Then the Jacket bats lit up in the fourth inning as Kasen Handal pushed Joshua Perez and Cipriano Ayala across the plate followed by a Jeremy Valdez double that scored Handal.  Two walks and a couple of wild pitches ended with Jeremy Valdez finding home plate for the Jacket’s 8th run of the day. The Yellowjackets collected seven hits; Kasen Handal and Jeremy Valdez each collected two hits to lead the team.

 

 

Galena Park Baseball Game Update - Fort Bend Marshall

Both the JV and varsity baseball teams found a “W” this last Tuesday night against Fort Bend Marshall.


JV Team:
Galena Park Yellowjackets JV team dominated Marshall in a three inning 20-0 hit-fest.  The Yellowjackets scored 5 runs in the first inning, 12 runs in the second inning, and 3 more runs in the third inning.  The team had 1 error for the game and 8 hits while giving up no hits to Marshall.


Varsity Team:
The varsity team defeated Fort Bend Marshall in a low-scoring affair as both teams’ pitchers held the opposing offenses in check.  The Yellowjacket pitchers allowed three hits for Fort Bend Marshall in their 3-1 win.  Neither team seemed to be able to put any runs on the board until Francisco Perez started off the fourth inning with a single, line drive to center field.  F. Perez ended up on 2nd on an error by the center fielder.  With a runner in scoring position, William Hernandez grounded out to the shortstop scoring F. Perez.  G.P. added another run in the fifth inning after courtesy runner, Julian Macias stole 2nd and scored on a Mauricio Martinez bunt.  The third run came in the sixth inning after Carlos Calvillo’s double to right field scored William Hernandez.  Joshua Perez earned the win throwing six innings, surrendering one run, three hits, and striking out 12.  Adam Salinas recorded the last three outs to earn the save for the Yellowjackets.  William Hernandez and Carlos Calvillo each drove in one run and G.P. didn't commit a single error in the field.  Aaron Rodriguez had the most chances in the field with 14.


On Deck:

The varsity team will be in the Pasadena I.S.D tournament March 2nd through March 4th and will face their second district opponent, Fort Bend Elkins March 7th at 7:00 pm.

 

 

Galena Park Baseball Game Update - Varsity Tournament

The Galena Park Varsity baseball team was back in action against Bellaire High School and Strake Jesuit this last Friday, February 24th.


Varsity Team:
The Yellowjackets had a 2:00 pm game Friday afternoon against Bellaire High School which ended badly for G.P. as they took a 1-8 loss.  The first inning was the only inning the ended with runs on the board for the Jackets after Kasen Handal hit a sacrifice fly to center field scoring Joshua Perez.  Bellaire managed to score 3 runs in the first and another 5 in the third off of 9 hits, while G.P. could only manage 3 hits for the game. 


The Jackets had to forget quickly as the stepped back on the field for a 4:00 pm showdown against Strake Jesuit.  Kasen Handal got the scoring going early on a one-run homerun in the first inning. In the bottom of the second inning, Strake Jesuit tied things up at one.  The game remained knotted 1-1 until the top of the fifth when Joshua Perez put down a bunt that allowed William Hernandez to score.  Then Albert Rodriguez started the sixth inning by getting on base of an error and advancing to 3rd off a walk and a sacrifice.  Then his brother, Aaron Rodriguez nailed a hard ground ball to left field scoring both Albert and Adam Salinas giving G.P. a 4-1 lead.  Strake Jesuit trailed 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning when Mercer singled off of William Hernandez, driving in three runs and stealing the game from Galena Park by a score of 5-4.  Francisco Perez took the loss for Yellow Jackets after throwing five and two-thirds innings, giving up five runs, four hits, and striking out four.  Aaron Rodriguez went 1-for-1 at the plate as he led the team with two runs batted in.

 

 

Galena Park Baseball Game Update - JV Tournament

The Galena Park JV baseball team continued playing in their tournament February 24th and 25th against Baytown Lee High School and Galveston Ball High School.


JV Team:
The JV team and Baytown Lee traded the lead early in their game on Friday, but eventually Galena Park prevailed by a score of 15-2.  Galena Park took the lead the second inning and secured the victory with runs in the third inning.  The Yellowjacket’s big third inning was driven by doubles from Isaiah Hernandez, Julian Lopez, Brandon Rocha and Michael Gaitan; a single by Trinidad Gallo; and stolen bases by Jonathon Sunday and Gilberto Rios.  Juan Castillo earned the win for G.P. throwing four innings, giving up two runs, four hits, striking out four, and walking zero.  Trinidad Gallo and Julian Lopez each drove in three runs to lead the Yellowjackets.


The Jackets then moved on to the Tors of Galveston Ball defeating them 4-2 thanks to a walk-off double. The game was tied at two with G.P. batting in the top of the seventh when Isaiah Martinez doubled off driving in one run.  Trinidad Gallo earned the win with his four innings of work, surrendering one run, two hits, striking out three, and walking zero.  Pedro Hernandez started the game for G.P. throwing three innings, allowing one run, two hits, striking out two, and walking one.  The Yellowjackets had 10 hits in the game; Juan Castillo and Isaiah Martinez each collected multiple hits while Martinez, Rios, Hernandez and Castillo each drove in one run.


The JV team found themselves facing Galveston Ball again Saturday afternoon, but the outcome fell toward the favor of the Tors (9-4).  The Jackets took an early lead in the first inning as one run scored on a stolen base.  G.P. scored again in the first and in the second matching Ball’s 3 run first inning.  Then the wings came off in the third as Ball racked up 5 runs and added another in the fourth.  G.P. did add an additional run in the fourth but the damage had already been done.  Gilberto Rios took the loss for the Yellowjackets pitching two and a third innings, surrendering eight runs, seven hits, and walking one.  Pedro Hernandez, Julian Lopez, and Gilberto Rios all had one hit for the Jackets.

 

 

Galena Park Baseball Game Update - Goose Creek

The Galena Park JV baseball team competed against Goose Creek Memorial High School and St. Thomas High School in a tournament Thursday, February 23rd.


JV Team:
The young Jackets fell to Goose Creek Memorial by a score of 6-2 in their 9:00 am game Thursday morning.  The Yellowjackets struggled getting on base through the first three innings while G.C.M managed to rack up 5 runs.  G.P. found some offense in the top of the fourth on a double by Juan Castillo, a single by Pedro Hernandez and another single by Isaiah Hernandez scoring Castillo.  The second run of the game was scored in the fifth inning after Gilberto Rios doubled scoring Isaiah Martinez who reached on an error. 
The 3:00 pm game was just a tough as the morning game for the Yellowjackets as the lost to St. Thomas by a score of 10-2.  The game started positively as G.P. managed to match the 2 runs St. Thomas scored in the top of the first with two first inning runs of their own.  Isaiah Martinez started the Yellowjackets off with a double to left field, followed Gilberto Rios reach on a walk.  Pedro Hernandez stepped up to the plate and singled a line drive up left field scoring both Martinez and Rios making the score 2-2.  Unfortunately, that would be all the offense the Jackets could muster as they gave up 4 runs in the second, 3 in the fourth, and 1 in the fifth.

 

 

Galena Park Baseball Game Update - Bellaire Tournament

The Galena Park Varsity baseball team traveled to Knoblauch Field to compete in the Bellaire Tournament this last Thursday, February 22nd where they finished the day 1-1.


Varsity Team:
The Yellowjackets were matched against a new district foe, Shadow Creek High School, for the 4:00 pm game Thursday afternoon.  Shadow Creek, unfortunately, didn’t have enough to match the Yellowjacket fire power as G.P. won 10-0.  The Yellowjackets bats were on fire early in the first inning as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead that began with Joshua Perez reaching on an error.  Perez advanced to 3rd base on a sacrifice by Mauricio Martinez.  Kasen Handal reached 1st after being hit by a pitch putting runners at the corners for Francisco Perez who scored J. Perez on a grounder to the short stop.  Aaron Rodriguez grounded out to 1st base scoring Kasen Handal followed by Carlos Castillo reaching on an error that scored Francisco Perez. The Yellowjackets capitalized on errors in the second inning scoring 2 more runs and taking a 5-0 lead.  The Jackets put 5 more runs on the board in the third inning.  Carlos Calvillo and Adam Salinas scored on a wild pitch, Joshua Perez got an RBI on a ground out to first, Kasen Handal hit a double and earned an RBI, followed by a Francisco single and RBI making the score 10-0.  Sergio Rodriguez earned the win for Yellowjackets throwing four innings, surrendering zero runs, two hits, striking out four, and walking one.  The Yellowjackets collected eight hits for the game.


The 6:00 pm was ended in a tough 4-3 loss to Jersey Village.  Both teams managed to put runs up as the first inning ended with a 2-2 tie.  Both Mauricio Martinez and Francisco Perez hit singles that put them on base with F. Perez scoring Martinez.  Then Aaron Rodriguez doubled a line drive to left field scoring F. Perez.  The score remained knotted at 2 all until the bottom of fourth when Jersey Village scored on a wild pitch by Carlos Calvillo.  G.P. managed to put up their own score in the top of the fifth after Kasen Handal doubled to center field and was plated by a single by Aaron Rodriguez.  With the score tied 3-3 Jersey Village managed another run in the bottom of the fifth to take the 4-3 win.  Carlos Calvillo took the loss for Galena Park in four innings of work; surrendering four runs, six hits, and striking out three.  Aaron Rodriguez went 2-for-2 at the plate to leading the Jackets in hits.

 

 

Galena Park Baseball Game Update - C.E. King

Yellowjackets hold off C.E. King for a victory on Wednesday, February 22nd.


JV Team:
Galena Park Yellowjackets JV swarmed all over the Panthers of C.E. King Wednesday night as they dominated in an 11-0 victory.


Varsity Team:
The varsity team jumped on C.E. King early in the first inning with a 3 run lead.  Kasen Handal started the Yellowjackets off with a single to left field.  Francisco Perez reached base on a walk and Handal advanced to 2nd.  Adam Salinas reached base on an error and Handal scored the first run.  Aaron Rodriguez got on base on another error loading the bases for Mauricio Martinez who singled on a line drive to left field scoring both Perez and Salinas.  The Jackets add another run in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Francisco Perez that scored Sergio Rodriguez.  C.E. King managed to score a single run in the bottom of the second inning bringing the score to 4-1.  Galena Park added a run in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings extending their lead to 7-1 at the bottom of the sixth.  Then the Panthers pushed in 3 runs in the sixth and another in the seventh, but it wasn’t enough.  Galena Park holds onto the 7-5 win.  The Yellowjackets collected ten hits in the game.  Kasen Handal and Mauricio Martinez each collected multiple hits while Martinez led G.P. with two RBIs and went 2-for-4 on the day.
