GPHS Basketball Game Update - Santa Fe

The Galena Park Fighting Yellowjackets hosted the Santa Fe Indians in their last game of the 2017 year.

Freshman Black Team:
The Black team played in a back and forth contest as each team battled for every point.  The Indians took an early 20-15 lead in the first but found the Yellowjackets a hard foe to shake as the game progressed.  The Yellowjackets put up another 15 points in the second quarter tying the game at 30 at halftime.  Each team added another 13 points in the third keeping the game knotted up at 43-43 going into the final quarter of play.  The Indians pulled out a late 59-51 victory as the Yellowjackets found themselves having to stop the clock with fouls and the Indians capitalized from the foul line.  Francisco Villalobos scored 12 points and Angel Castillo scored 16 points to lead the young Jackets.

Junior Varsity Team:
The JV team controlled every facet of their game against the Indians.  They played aggressive defense, capitalized on Indian turnovers, ran a disciplined offense, and got everyone involved.  The game was close as G.P. took a small 16-10 lead in the first, which was increased to a 14 point lead in the second, a 25 point lead in the third and ended with an 82-36 win over the Indians.  Kailen Collums scored 14 points and played with nitro in his tanks all game.  Derek Sampson has come on as the season has progressed scoring 15 points for the Yellowjackets.  His hustle and sweet shot are making waves for the young JV team.  Danilo DeCosta moved up from the freshman team to help out the JV team.  Danilo managed to pour in 11 points in just the second half.  Miguel Umana played a disciplined game, running the offense and controlling the press, and he added another 13 points to the G.P. total.

Varsity Team:
The Galena Park Yellowjackets battled for four quarters to a 70-61 victory.  The game was close as each team tried to find their groove.  There were several times during the game when the Yellowjackets seemed to be in complete control and on the verge of ripping the score wide open, but then a mental lapse would allow Santa Fe to steal back some control.  Finally, late in the third quarter and through all of the fourth quarter Jalen Davis decided to be the senior and take control.  Jalen led the Yellowjackets to victory scoring 24 points, ripping down 9 rebounds, racking up 3 blocked shots, and swiping 5 steals.  Julian Macias contributed 11 points and a couple of assists.

The JV once team started on fire behind the energy of Derrick Sampson Friday night and the three point shooting of Kailen Collums.  Derrick’s 6 steals, aggressiveness on offense and high energy jump started the Yellowjackets into their eventual 68-28 victory.  Derrick led the team with 14 points followed by Kailen Collums’ 11 points and Patrick Hernandez added 10 points.

GPHS Basketball Game Update - Fort Bend Marshall

The Galena Park Fighting Yellowjackets hosted Fort Bend Marshall High School Tuesday, December 5th.

Freshman Gold Team:
The Galena Park gold team lost to Marshall by a score of 25-83 and Ivan Hernandez earned recognition for his outstanding play.

Freshman Black Team:
The black team made a valiant effort offensively to stay in a fast-paced freshman game.  Unfortunately, their defensive effort was lacking putting them behind by 13 point early against a high powered Marshall offense.  The Yellowjackets gave up 25 points in the first quarter but managed to hold the Buffaloes to only 7 points in the second quarter as they ended the first half down 23-32.  The second half showcased a 22 point third quarter and an 18 point fourth quarter by Galena Park, but Marshall poured in another 25 points in the third and 22 in the fourth.  Marshall defeated G.P. 79-63.  Angel Castillo scored 14 points for Galena Park as did John Victoria while Francisco Villalobos added another 13 points from the post position.

JV Team:
The JV once again struggled getting any offense started as they scored double digits in only the fourth quarter of play.  Marshall soundly defeated G.P. 81-35.  Kailen Collums and Patrick Hernandez led the Jackets with 7 and 8 points respectively.

Varsity Team:
The varsity team came out aggressive working their offensive sets and getting to the bucket early, sadly a case of nerves prevented many of those easy buckets from falling.  The jitters and frustration seemed to continue through the second quarter as Marshall out hustled G.P. to the ball allowing easy buckets for the Buffs.  The intermission helped the Jackets catch their breath but the team continued to be a step behind on transition defense allowing for a plethora of Marshall lay-ups.  Marshall finished off the Jackets 94-55.  Senior, Jalen Davis led the Yellowjackets with 17 points.  Sophomore, Eddie Silva added another 12 points followed by Julian Macias’ 11 points.

GPHS Basketball Game Update - Pasadena Memorial

On the first day of the Thanksgiving break the Galena Park boys’ basketball teams hosted Pasadena Memorial.

Freshman Gold Team:
The gold team defeated Pasadena Memorial in a high scoring early season game.  The young Yellowjackets won 58-48 led by the play of Ricardo Garcia.

Freshman Black Team:
The black team also won a high scoring game as they squeaked out a 57-54 win over Memorial.  The game was close throughout as G.P. never led by more than 6 points, but lead they did, and when the buzzer sounds a lead is all that is required.  The black team managed to score in double digits all four quarters and put up a final 57 points holding Pasadena Memorial to 54 points.  Angel Castillo and John Victoria each put in 17 points for the Jackets.

Junior Varsity Team:
The JV team started off slow as they took a 4 point deficit into the beginning of the second quarter, but after giving up 18 points in the first quarter they held Memorial to 9, 10, and 13 points in the next three quarters while throwing down 15, 25 and 20 points of their own.  Galena Parks big scoring second half secured the 74-50 victory.  Everyone contributed in the early season win and Danilo DeCosta scored 33 points leading all scorers.

Varsity Team:
The varsity played a solid first half scoring 11 and 13 points in the first two quarters, but gave up 12 and 13 points resulting in a one point deficit at half.  The third quarter was dominated by the Yellowjackets as they doubled the Memorial scoring and finished the quarter with a 48-36 lead.  The Yellowjackets put up another 15 points in the fourth quarter but were plagued by turnovers that allowed Memorial to take a 2 point lead late in the fourth.  With the final seconds ticking off the clock the Jackets had the ball when Xavier Macias drove to the hoop and finished the shot as the buzzer sounded sending the game into overtime.  Tied 63-63 Memorial won the tip and bolted to the basket for an easy lay-up and a 2 point lead.  Galena Park answered and the score remained knotted at 65 all until the last 10 seconds when Memorial put the ball in their three-point shooter’s hands.  All eyes were on this young man as he eyed the basket, but sophomore Eddie Silva wasn’t going to let Coach Woodall down as he flew out and blocked the shot.  It seemed that a second overtime was inevitable, but as all eyes watched Eddie no one blocked out Memorial and #22 managed to snag the ball from the air and drive in for the buzzer beating shot and the win.  It was a great game by two well-matched teams.  Senior, Jalen Davis led G.P. with 20 points, followed by Xavier Macias with 11 points and Nick Lance with 10 points.

On Deck:
The boys’ teams will be back in action after the break on November 28th against Splendora High School.  The games will be at Splendora High School and will start at 4:30 p.m.
