Galena Park Basketball Game Recap - Shadow Creek

On Friday, February 10th the Galena Park Fighting Yellowjackets hosted Shadow Creek High School in their final home appearance for the 2016-2017 season.  Not only was this the final home game, but this was also the night that the 2017 seniors were recognized for their years of hard work and dedication to the Galena Park Basketball Program.

Freshman Gold Team:
The Freshmen Gold team did not play.

Freshman Black Team:
The Freshmen Black team suffered a 12 point loss (48-60) in their final home game of this season.  From the tip, the Jackets were not themselves.  The usual full-court dominating defense was just not as dominating as we have all come to expect.  The young Jackets were lethargic and error prone most of the night.  There was a short burst of energy and scoring in the 4th quarter as the Yellowjackets chipped away at a 20 point Shark lead, but the time ticked off before the gap could be eradicated.  Paul Zermeno led the Yellowjackets with 17 points and a stellar night from the free-throw line and from the field.

JV Team:
The JV team struggled through the entire first half as they only managed to put 5 points on the board over two quarters.  The team managed to right the ship some in the second half as they cut a 23 point deficit into a 16 point deficit.  The Yellowjackets did hold the Sharks to under 50 points as they lost 32-48.  Andres Fernandez and Irvin Fuentes each scored 7 points for G.P.

Varsity Team:
The Galena Park Yellowjackets, Coach Wright, Coach Woodall, Coach Chinasa, and Coach Isenhower took a moment before the varsity game to acknowledge the seniors that will be graduating this spring.  The team presented Jason Victoria, Daniel Alaman, and Cesar Tijerina each with a signed basketball before the game started.  The Shadow Creek team was young and full of energy that they used to defeat Galena Park 45-75.  The first quarter was a competitive match up as Shadow Creek squeezed out a 19-16 lead.

Unfortunately, the Yellowjackets’ first quarter scoring was cut in half in the second as the Sharks took a 39-24 lead into the intermission.  The Jackets picked up the offense in the third quarter scoring 12 points, but they allowed a 20 point quarter by Shadow Creek and another 15 point quarter in the fourth.  Galena Park simply allowed Shadow Creek too many scoring opportunities that ended with a home-court loss.  Jalen Davis led the Yellowjackets with 17 points and senior, Cesar Tijerina added another 13 points.

On Deck:
The season finale will be on Tuesday, January 14th at Manvel High School.

Galena Park Basketball Game Recap - Santa Fe

The Galena Park Fighting Yellowjackets hosted the Santa Fe Indians for a rematch of a hotly contested game from the first round of district play.

Freshman Gold Team:
The Gold team didn’t play.

Freshman Black Team:
The Black team was back to their usual press early, press hard, press everyone mantra as they defeated Santa Fe 65-21.  The game was tight at the end of the first quarter as Galena Park had a narrow 3 point lead, but Eddie Silva found his groove in the second draining 3, 3-point shots that led to a 29-13 halftime lead.  The second half was all Galena Park as they held Santa Fe to 3 third quarter points and 5 fourth quarter points.  Eddie Silva was the leading scorer with 26 points and 5, 3-pointers.  As is the norm for the young Yellowjackets, everyone contributed on both sides of the ball making it a team win!

Junior Varsity Team:
The JV team controlled the first half of basketball against the Indians Tuesday evening as they took an 11-8 first quarter lead and a 17-16 halftime lead.  The Jackets scored another 12 points in the third, but gave up 19 points as they fell behind 29-35.  The fourth quarter was about the Yellowjacket defense and disciplined play on offense as they cut into the Indian lead and allowed only 4 points by the opposition.  The Yellowjackets had the ball with just over a second left in the game under their basket and a chance to win, but the shot fell short and Santa Fe pulled out the “W” by a score of 38-39.   Robert Moya and Miguel Umana each scored 9 points and Robert came up big at the end with some clutch shooting.

Varsity Team:
The Galena Park Yellowjackets battled for four quarters to a 67-54 victory.  The game had a little bit of everything; a 3-point goal and an opportunity for the bonus shot by Julian Macias at the end of the first quarter; a double foul that put Jalen Davis in foul trouble early in the first quarter; two huge drives and made shots by Xavier Macias in the third quarter; some beast-like offensive rebounding and put backs by Julian Macias in the second half; and a fourth quarter of nearly nothing but scoring from the free-throw line by the Jackets.  Julian Macias ended the game with 22 points leading all scorers, Jalen Davis added another 13 points while Xavier Macias and Cesar Tijerina played outstanding off the bench!

On Deck:
The Jackets have this Friday off and will return to play on Tuesday, February 7th.

Galena Park Basketball Game Recap - Galveston Ball

The Galena Park Fighting Yellowjackets hosted the Tors of Galveston Ball High School for a second round of district matchup this Tuesday, January 24th.

Freshman Gold Team:
The Gold team lost 39-53 led by the scoring of Carlos Sanchez with 15 points.

Freshman Black Team:
The Black team lost a nail-biter in the last seconds of the game by a score of 65-66.  The Black team was uncharacteristically slow and unfocused early in the first quarter as Ball built up an 18-14 lead.  In the second, G.P. looked more like themselves as they went on an early scoring spree that gave them the lead.  The lead was short-lived as the Jackets struggled to break the Tors’ trapping defense a fell behind 33-38 at the half.  The Yellowjackets did hit a big score at the buzzer closing the deficit.  The third quarter was all about Eddie Silva who was a machine form the 3-point line.  His scoring and some aggressive offense by the rest of the team gave G.P. the 54-51 lead at the end of three.  Galena Park continued to control the tempo through most of the 4th but Ball stayed within 5 points the entire time.  Then with under 2 minutes remaining #1 for Ball rampaged the Yellowjackets hitting the bucket that put Ball up with 1 second remaining.  The Yellowjackets had the ball and an opportunity but panicked on the inbounds turning the ball over and giving the Tors the 66-65 victory.

Junior Varsity Team:
The JV team was a poised and self-less group of young men through the first two quarters of basketball Tuesday night.  The game started off positive as A.J. Olmeda drained a 3-pointer.  The Yellowjackets seemed to have found discipline and focus over the weekend as they broke the Tor press and found the open man.  The score at the end of one was 17-17 and at halftime 29-34 Galveston Ball.  The second half was a whole other beast; the Yellowjackets turned the ball over often and couldn’t seem to box out on defense.  Galveston Ball took advantage of the turnovers and the multiple opportunities to score and turned those into a 17 point lead.  The fourth quarter continued to spiral downward as Ball finished the night with a 47-80 win.  A.J. Olmeda scored 11 for the Yellowjackets, and Robert Moya and Miguel Umana scored 10 each.

Varsity Team:
The Galena Park Yellowjacket basketball team struggled most of the night with the exception of a scoring spurt in the fourth quarter against Galveston Ball.  The Yellowjackets lost 48-80.  The team was led in scoring by Jalen Davis who scored 21 points.

On Deck:
The Jackets will travel to Texas City High School Friday, January 27th.

Galena Park Basketball Game Recap - Fort Bend Marshall

The Galena Park Fighting Yellowjackets hosted Fort Bend Marshall High School Tuesday, January 17th.

Freshman Gold Team:
The Galena Park gold team did not play.

Freshman Black Team:
The black team controlled and dominated the Buffaloes from start to finish.  The team started off with their characteristic full court press that led to a 22-8 first quarter lead.  The Yellowjackets continued to look like a fine-tuned basketball machine as defense and offensive ball movement led to a 48-14 half time score.  In the third quarter, Coach Woodall pulled off the press and the Jackets played sound half-court defense that led to another 16 points in the third and a final score of 83-24.  Multiple Jackets scored in double figures:  Kailen Columns with 14, Derrick Samson with 12, and Patrick Hernandez and Ezequiel Venegas each scored 11 points.

JV Team:
The JV once again struggled getting any offense started as their game was dominated by more turnovers than points scored.  The JV team lost 22-99.  The bright spot of the night was the hard defensive play and high energy that Vinnie Trevino brought off the bench.  Vinnie also was the high-point man with 6 points all scored on two, three pointers late in the fourth quarter.

Varsity Team:
The varsity team came out on fire led by senior Cesar Tijerina who scored a quick 6 points as the Yellowjackets stayed within striking distance with a 16-18 deficit at the end of the first quarter.  The second quarter was all Marshall, as their scorers found a rhythm leading to a 27-44 Marshall lead.  The third quarter was more Marshall and a plethora of turnovers by Galena Park that led to a 35-78 third quarter deficit.  The Yellowjackets did manage to calm down some in the fourth scoring 20 points, but Marshall added another 22 points to their total as well.  The game ended with Marshall winning 96-55.  Jalen Davis led the Yellowjackets with 21 points.

On Deck:

Freshman Black Team:
The black team controlled and dominated the Mavericks for four quarters of basketball in their 65-47 victory Friday night.  The entire team played well and contributed to the win.  The aggressive full court press continues to look strong and leads to many of the Yellowjackets offensive opportunities.  Eddie Silva led the Jackets with 15 points and Patrick Hernandez added another 12 points.

Freshman Black Team:
The black team battled in a fast-paced, shoot-out against the Eagles, but fell three points short as they lost 68-71.  The game was a one point game all through the first half with G.P. taking a 31-30 lead into the intermission.  The Eagles put on a short three-point clinic in the third quarter pulling ahead of the Yellowjackets by a score of 48-52.  The final quarter was a back and forth contest with opportunities that the young Jackets failed to capitalize on resulting in a three point loss.  Eddie Silva scored 13 points, Pat Hernandez scored 14 points, Kailen Collumns scored 10 points and Austin Altwein scored 11 points for the Yellowjackets.

JV Team:
The JV team had moments of brilliance and moments of frustration in their 42-65 loss to the Eagles.  Miguel Umana and Daniel DeSantiago both scored 10 points for the Jackets.

Varsity Team:
The varsity team played an aggressive first quarter capitalizing on aggressive defense and some key one on one match ups.  Led by Jalen Davis and Julian Macias the Yellowjackets built a 19-15 lead at the end of the first quarter.  Some foul trouble slowed the Jackets down some, but Anthony Salinas contributed with a big three-point shot and some solid defense keeping the Jackets close as the quarter ended 34-39.  The third quarter remained close as both teams made big plays but the Eagles built up their lead to 47-54.  Then in the fourth quarter the Yellowjackets scoring went dry as they were only able to put up another 4 points as they lost 51-72.  Jalen Davis scored 21 points and Julian Macias scored 14 points.

Galena Park Basketball Game Recap - Elkins

On Tuesday, December 13th the Yellowjackets hosted the Knights of Elkins High School for a district matchup and it was a night full of positive moments for most of the teams.

Freshman Gold Team:
The Gold team had a tough night but did manage to put in 30 points in their 50-30 loss to Elkins.

Freshman Black Team:
The Black team lost to Elkins 81-68 after allowing a 14 point deficit in the first quarter.  The Yellowjackets missed several easy buckets and lay-ups in the first quarter and gave Elkins way too many second and third chances at the basket.  The Yellowjackets scoring and play improved after the first quarter but poor rebounding and poor transition continued to plague the Yellowjackets.  Eddie Silva led the Yellowjackets with 21 points and Pat Hernandez added another 12 points.

Junior Varsity Team:
The JV team had a hard night from start to finish as they lost to Elkins 66-32.  Turnovers on offense and a lack of boxing out on defense hindered the Yellowjackets throughout.  DeAndre Fonseca scored 9 points leading all G.P. scorers.

Varsity Team:
The varsity team was disciplined and patient on both sides of the ball for three quarters and the early minutes of the fourth quarter keeping them in a tight battle with the Knights.  The Yellowjackets’ disciplined offense created a 34-31 lead at the end of the second quarter.  Then in the third the Yellowjackets converted multiple three-point plays off of penetration keeping them within 2 points as the third quarter ended with a 51-53 G.P. deficit.  The fourth was a back-and-forth quarter as both teams took advantage of scoring opportunities, but Galena Park started to play hectic and turnovers and fouls in the end cost the Yellowjackets.  Elkins pulled out the 68-55 win in the final 2 minutes as the Yellowjackets were forced to foul to stop the clock.  Jalen Davis led the Yellowjackets with 21 points and Julian Macias poured in another 15 points.  All other Yellowjackets contributed as scorers too, showcasing a great team effort.

Galena Park Basketball Game Recap - Spendora

The Yellowjackets hosted Splendora High School this Tuesday, November 29th for a non-district showdown that ended well for the sub-varsity teams but was a disappointing evening for the varsity team.

Freshman Black Team:
The freshman started the evening off like they have been starting every game, full of energy and with some pressure defense.  The young Yellowjackets came at Splendora with quick feet and quick hands all four quarters which led to a 66-28 Galena Park victory.  The defense held Splendora to only 4 points in the first quarter as they took the 24-4 lead.  Defense continued to be the source of all things good as G.P. poured in 15 points in the second quarter, 18 points in the third, and another 9 in the fourth.  Eddie Silva led the Yellowjackets with 20 points and he was complimented by Derrick Sampson’s 12 points and Austin Altwein’s 10 points.

Junior Varsity Team:
The JV team played some full court, pressure defense as well which resulted in several Jacket steals; but the JV team struggled finishing easy lay-ups and jump shots.  The Yellowjackets were victorious by a score of 47-38, but missed opportunities nearly cost them the game as Splendora kept it close and pulled within four points midway through the fourth quarter.  A quick time out by Coach Chinasa calmed and refocused the troops so they could pull ahead of Splendora in the final minutes of the game.  Andre Fonseca led all scorers with 20 points.

Varsity Team:
The varsity team started off slow in the first quarter as they struggled to find a rhythm and the basket against a tight Splendora zone.  As the time ran down in the first the Yellowjackets found their groove both on defense and offense pulling within 5 points at the end of the first quarter.  The low scoring continued through the second as Splendora took a 17-23 lead into the intermission.  The third quarter was more of the same for G.P. as they battled through a scoring drought that lasted nearly 3 minutes of the third quarter while Splendora drained two timely 3 point shots and sank all 6 of their free-throw attempts.  Splendora finished the third quarter with a 24-39 point lead.  The Yellowjackets held Splendora 5 points in the final quarter but just couldn’t find the basket as they fell 32-46.  Jalen Davis led the Yellowjackets with 11 points.

On Deck:
The boys’ teams will be in tournaments this coming Thursday.  The varsity team will be in the Spring Branch tournament while the young freshman team will take their defense to Texas City for a tournament.

Galena Park Basketball Game Recap - Dayton Broncos

During the Thanksgiving break the Galena Park boys’ basketball teams hosted the Dayton Broncos.

Freshman Black Team:
The freshman started the morning off with their typical full-court pressure defense that created many scoring opportunities throughout the matchup.  Galena Park went up early in the first quarter but found themselves battling off a late quarter Bronco scoring surge.  Dayton managed to tie the game 19-19 at the end of the first quarter.  The Yellowjackets managed to tighten up the defense in the second quarter and nearly doubled their first quarter score as they took a 35-28 lead into the intermission.  G.P. tacked on another 15 points in the third quarter making the score 50-36 and added another 18 points in the fourth taking the victory by a score of 68-47.  The young Yellowjackets played some aggressive team defense while Eddie Silva and Pat Hernandez poured in 24 and 10 points respectively.

Junior Varsity Team:
The JV game wasn’t near the scoring showcase the freshman game was, but the JV did manage to keep their heads and pull off a 42-38 victory.  G.P. led at the end of the first quarter by a score of 20-13, but could only manage to drain 6 points the entire second quarter.  The Yellowjackets took a 26-21 lead into halftime, but came out in the third quarter with a defensive clinic as they held Dayton to only 2 points in the third quarter.  The third quarter score was 39-23 and it looked like it was all G.P. all day, but Dayton had other plans.  The Broncos battled back to within 4 points, but the Yellowjackets’ defense held strong keeping Dayton just out of reach of the victory.  Jakobi Joubert led the Yellowjackets with 12 points.

Varsity Team:
The varsity team began the first half in a point for point battle as each team was trying to find an offensive groove.  After some hard work and focus the Yellowjackets managed to tie the game up at 15 all by the end of the first quarter.  Then early foul trouble for a couple of key players limited options for Coach Isenhower and put the Broncos in the double bonus with more than 4 minutes left in the second quarter.  Dayton took a 28-40 lead into half, added another 24 points in the third, and 16 more in the fourth.  The Yellowjackets had moments throughout the second half, but the scorers were lost to fouls and the deficit became too large to overcome.  Sophomore, Julian Macias led all Yellowjackets with 26 points followed by junior, Anthony Salinas’ 10 points.

On Deck:
The boys’ teams will be back in action after the break on November 29th against Splendora High School.  The games will be at Galena Park High School and will start at 4:00 p.m.

Galena Park Basketball Game Recap - Hamshire Fannett

It was a thrilling and victorious night of basketball on Tuesday, November 15th at Galena Park High School as your Fighting Yellowjacket basketball teams took on Hamshire Fannett at Galena Park.

Freshman Team:
The freshman team started the evening with an explosive and fast-paced game that ended with the Yellowjackets dominating by a score of 70-16.  The first half was a myriad of steals and full court pressure defense.  The “in your face” press led to 20 first quarter points and another 15 second quarter points giving the Jackets a 35-7 halftime lead.  The third quarter was still all about the defense, but the control happened with a disciplined half-court trap.  Hamshire-Fannett continued to suffer from turnovers that led to another 25 third quarter points and a 60-16 deficit.  The Yellowjackets fell back into a disciplined zone in the fourth quarter and managed to tack on another 10 points finishing the game with a 70-16 victory.  Three players amassed double digit scoring:  Jorge Duran with 13 points, Eddie Silva with 14 points, and Pat Hernandez with another 16 points.  Jorge Duran also fueled many of the defensive takeaways that led to point for himself or his teammates.

Junior Varsity Team:
The JV team had the bar set high after the freshman team played so well, and they didn’t disappoint.  The JV team defeated Hamshire-Fannett 60-30 behind aggressive, pressure defense and a fast-paced transition game.  The Yellowjackets had an 18-5 lead at the end of the first quarter and expanded their lead to 33-10 at halftime.  The scoring slowed down some in the third as the Yellowjackets only added 11 points to their halftime score, but sunk another 16 points in the fourth to finish with a total of 60 points.  DeAndre Fonseca scored 16 points and Irvin Fuentes scored 10 points.

Varsity Team:
The varsity team looked like a bigger, faster version of the earlier Yellowjacket teams as they came out quick taking a 22-6 first quarter lead.  The defense was the force that spurred the offense as steals led directly to easy buckets for Galena Park extending the deficit to 40-13.  The third and fourth quarters showcased some bench energy that rained down point after point after point.  Xavier Macias and Jason Victoria were scoring machines in the fourth quarter and big-dog, Raver Gonzalez pulled down some big rebounds.  The varsity team finished off Hamshire-Fannett by a score of 88-40.  Four Yellowjackets scored in the double digits:  Julian Macias with 21 points, Xavier Macias with 14 points, Nick Lance with 19 points, and Jason Victoria with 10 points.  The Yellowjackets looked good for an early season contest and play should only improve with experience.
