GALENA PARK HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL NEWS

GPHS Basketball Game Update - Santa Fe

The Galena Park Lady Jackets hosted Santa Fe High School.

Freshman Team:
The freshman team did not play as Santa Fe didn’t have enough girls to field a team.

Junior Varsity Team:
The JV team struggled scoring all night on Tuesday which led to a 36-47 loss to Santa Fe.  All the Lady Jackets played significant minutes and many of them made considerable contributions, but getting the ball into the basket was hard for everyone.  Deysy Rodriguez played exceptional scoring 9 points and making some key connections for a couple of assists.  Isabel Alvarez came off the bench and helped the team with 4 steals, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists.  Junior, Kylah Evans was a beast under the basket as she collected 11 rebounds on the night.

Varsity Team:
The varsity team once again kept the fans on the edge of their seat battling through a tight game versus the Lady Indians.  The first quarter was led by the aggressive play of Destiny Morales and the scoring of Yesenia Hidalgo.  The Lady Jackets managed to maintain a sliver of a lead (19-18) as the intermission began.  The Yellowjackets struggled finding the bucket all night but the problem became more prominent in the second half as G.P. only scored 15 point the rest of the game.  Offensive rebounds and put backs by the Indians eventually wore down the Yellowjacket defense and Santa Fe pulled out the 48-34 win.  Yesenia Hidalgo played a fantastic game on senior night; she led the team with 19 points and was accompanied by the dominating play of Destiny Morales.  Destiny ripped down 7 rebounds, had 2 steals, a blocked shot, 3 assists and countless hustle plays the kept the momentum going and led to scoring opportunities for her team.

On Deck:
The Lady Jackets will travel to Willowridge High School on Tuesday, February 6th.

GPHS Basketball Game Update - Marshall

The Galena Park Lady Jackets hosted Thurgood Marshall High School in a re-scheduled district game as the “wintery mix” iced up the Houston roads this last week.

Freshman Team:
The freshman team played their best game of the season scoring 35 points against Marshall.  The game began with both teams struggling to find the basket as the first quarter ended with a 5 to 5 tie.  Marshall found their groove in the second scoring 16 points to Galena Park’s 2 points.  The Lady Jackets regrouped at half time and managed to drop in 28 points in the second half.  The Lady Buffs managed to hold onto the big lead they built in the first half and squeaked out a 35-45 victory.  Cielo Fuentes played all four quarters and scored 23 points for the Yellowjackets.

Junior Varsity Team:
The JV team trailed 10-14 at the end of the first quarter only to flip the script in the second.  By the end of the first half, Galena Park had scored 24 points and took a 4 point lead into intermission.  The game stayed close through the third quarter as Marshall pulled ahead by 2 points in the third.  Unfortunately, the Yellowjackets’ offense iced up just like the roads as they only scored 3 points in the fourth quarter.  Marshall pulled ahead and held onto the 46-37 victory.  Jessica Espinosa, Deisy Rodriguez, and Lupita Ramirez each scored 8 points.

Varsity Team:
The varsity team was all about the DEFENSE Thursday night.  As the season has been full of difficulties for the Jackets, Thursday night they showed a beacon of light in their darkness.  The Yellowjackets kept the Lady Buffs offense in check behind the speed and aggression of freshmen Natalie Martinez and Aniya Eason’s defense.  After a slow first half the offense picked up in the second half behind senior, Yesenia Hidalgo.  The Yellowjackets battled and battled until the final buzzer and tied up the game at 31-31, sending the game into overtime.  Marshall took charge from the tip in the overtime and never gave up control winning the game 37-31.  Yesenia Hidalgo led the Jackets on offense scoring 13 points, 3 rebounds and 1 assist while Aniya Eason scored 8 points, 2 rebounds, 1 block, and 2 steals.  Junior, Destiny Morales also contributed with 10 rebounds, 2 blocks, 1 steal and 1 assist.

GPHS Basketball Game Update - Manvel

The Galena Park Lady Jackets versus Manvel High School.

Freshman Team:
The freshman team scored 9 points against a very tough and disciplined Manvel team.  Daisy Ramirez led the Yellowjakcets with 4 points in their 9-65 loss to Manvel.

Junior Varsity Team:
The JV team was led by the offense of Karyn Pamenas who scored 5 points and the rebounding of Kylah Evans who ripped down 13 rebounds.  Unfortunately, the Yellowjackets managed to put up only 14 points against Manvel’s 59 points.

Varsity Team:
The varsity team started slow and allowed Manvel to dictate the game pace.  Unfortunately, the Lady Jackets seemed unable to maintain the pace as they lost to Manvel 20-61.  Junior, Gennessis Cocom led the team with 6 points, 1 steal, and 3 rebounds on the night.

GPHS Basketball Game Update - Texas City

The Lady Jackets hosted the Stingarees from Texas City Tuesday, December 19th.

Freshman Team:
Both the Texas City freshman team and the G.P. freshman found it difficult to get any offense started early Tuesday night.  They played the first eight minutes with only 4 points scored for each team.  Texas City capitalized on G.P. turnovers in the second quarter as they jumped out to an 18-9 lead.  The young lady Jackets continued to struggle offensively as they fell to the Stinagrees 35-22.  Cielo Fuentes and Nohelia Garcia each scored 8 points for the Yellowjackets.

Junior Varsity Team:
The JV team started off slow scoring only 2 points in the first quarter and giving up 11, but they managed to add 11 points in the second while holding the Stingarees to only 7 points.  They whittled the 5 point half time lead down to 3 points by the end of the third quarter and fought tooth and nail through the fourth coming within 1 point as the buzzer sounded.  The Stingarees won a hard fought 42-41 game.  Cammye Martinez led the Yellowjackets with 13 points, 6 steals, an assist and 1 rebound.  Deysy Rodriguez added another 8 points, 4 steals, an assist and a blocked shot.

Varsity Team:
The varsity game ended prematurely as the officials refused to finish the second half.  The Stingarees were leading the game 22-7 at halftime and apparently that will be the final score for the game?

GPHS Basketball Game Update - Elkins

Galena Park girls’ basketball hosted the Knights of Elkins High School this Tuesday night in a battle against a much bigger adversary.

Freshman Team:
The freshman team started slow scoring only 7 points in the first half, all 7 coming in the second quarter.  In the third quarter the young Lady Jackets added 2 points to their total and then went on a scoring spree in the fourth with 12 points.  Unfortunately, the fourth quarter firestorm was much too late as Elkins had already built up a 27 point lead.  Elkins won the game 46-17.  Nohelia Garcia led the Lady Jackets with 10 points.

JV Team:
The JV team struggled from the field up through the fourth quarter where they managed to hold Elkins to 12 points while scoring 14 of their own.  However, G.P. gave up a total of 45 points through the third while they only scoring 5 points.  This 40 point deficit was simply too much for the Jackets to overcome as they succumbed to the Knights by a score of 57-19.  Cammye Martinez scored 6 points and Emerald Lopez scored 5 points.  Emerald also led the Jackets in steals with 5 steals, all coming in the fourth quarter.  Isabel Alvarez contributed to the cause with 5 rebounds.

Varsity Team:
The Lady Jackets’ varsity team played some formidable defense against the Lady Knights of Elkins but turnovers and missed shots were the undoing of G.P. Tuesday night.  The first quarter remained close as a tightfisted zone defense by Galena Park held Elkins to only 7 points while the Jackets managed to squeeze in 3 points of their own.  Unfortunately, the Yellowjackets were plagued with turnovers and struggled keeping Elkins off the offensive boards.  Elkins was able to build up a double digit lead in the second and never relinquished that lead.  Galena Park fell to Elkins 78-20.  Senior, Yesenia Hidalgo led the Yellowjackets with 12 points.  Destiny Morales played outstanding defense holding Elkins 6 footer to only 4 points and bringing down 6 rebounds.  Elkins’ big girl was silent until Destiny came off the floor in the fourth quarter at which point she scored 10 points.  Gennessis Cocom and Aniya Eason both battled on the boards bringing down 6 more rebounds each and Jackie Hidalgo snatched 5 steals.

On Deck:

The Lady Jackets will be traveling to Galveston Ball Friday, December 15th.  The freshman game begins at 4:00 pm followed by the JV and then the varsity games.

GPHS Basketball Game Update - Shadow Creek

The Lady Jackets played host to the Sharks of Shadow Creek this last Tuesday, November 28th for their first district game.  Last year the Lady Jackets took advantage of a young group of Sharks, but this year the tables were turned and the victories went to Shadow Creek.

Freshman Team:
The freshman team started the night struggling to find any offense and turnovers led to a plethora of offensive opportunities for Shadow Creek.  Shadow Creek won 63-13.  Cielo Fuentes led the Yellowjackets in points with 11.

Junior Varsity Team:
The JV team managed to keep the game close through the first three quarters of play but sloppy play and a lack of rebounding doomed the Jackets in the fourth quarter.  Shadow Creek defeated Galena Park 51-28.  Deysy Rodriguez led the Jackets with 12 points.

Varsity Team:
The varsity team struggled from the field for the entire game as the lost their first district game 72-24.  The Lady Jackets were only averaging 5.5 points per quarter and against a fast and aggressive Shark team that wasn’t enough.  Yesenia Hidalgo, once again played every minute and led the team with 10 points.

GPHS Basketball Game Update - Pasadena High School

The Lady Jackets hosted Pasadena High School on Saturday, November 25, 2017.

Freshman Team:
The freshman team lost to the Lady Eagles of Pasadena by a score of 50-6.  The young Yellowjackets just couldn’t find the bucket as they struggled to score all game.  Leading the Yellowjackets in scoring was Kaitlyn Lozano who scored all 6 points.

Junior Varsity Team:
The JV team struggled scoring through all but the second quarter of their game.  The Eagles managed to build on a four point lead from the third to the fourth quarter as they defeated G.P. 32-23.  Deysy Rodriguez scored 6 for G.P. off the bench and Cammye Martinez added another 6 points.

Varsity Team:
The varsity team started with a solid 14 point first quarter that was fueled by some aggressive defense and offensive penetration, but only managed to find the bucket once more in the next two quarters combined.  Despite the scoring drought in the second and third quarters the Yellowjackets entered the fourth quarter with just a 4 basket deficit.  Unfortunately, the scoring woes continued as G.P. put in 7 points to Pasadena’s 11.  Pasadena won in a low scoring 33-23 game.  Yesenia Hidalgo played every minute and led her team with 12 points and 3 steals.  Her younger sister, Jackie played most of the game as well adding another 3 steals to the Yellowjackets statistics.

GPHS Basketball Game Update - South Houston

The Lady Jackets hosted South Houston High School for non-district on Tuesday, November 14th.

Freshman Team:
The freshman team lost to South Houston 51-22.  The young Jackets took a 6-5 lead in the first quarter but relinquished the lead in the second quarter.  Despite some moments, the Yellowjackets didn’t have enough offensive power to match the Lady Trojans.  Cielo Fuentes led the Yellowjackets with 10 points.

Junior Varsity Team:
The JV team took an early 11-6 lead in the first quarter but was plagued by miscues in the second that led to a 2 point quarter and a 17-13 G.P. deficit.  The Yellowjackets played some very aggressive defense, but that put the team in foul trouble and the Trojans on the free throw line.  That foul trouble and problems from the field led to a 40-29 defeat of our Jackets.  Deysy Rodriguez and Karyn Pamenas each scored 6 points to lead the Yellowjackets’ scoring.  Kylan Evans contributed off the bench with 4 rebounds.

Varsity Team:
The varsity team started off on fire behind the scoring and aggressive defense of Gisele Marroquin.  Gisele put in some early lay-ups off of South Houston turnovers giving the Jackets a 16-11 first quarter lead.  Coach Fountain played his young guns (2 freshman, 2 sophomores, and a senior) in the second quarter and they managed to add another 11 points giving G.P. the 27-17 lead at the intermission.  The Jackets stepped back on the quarter after the half and picked up right where they left off; playing aggressive pressure defense and scoring on Trojan turnovers.  The Yellowjackets finished off the night with a 54-49 victory.  Senior, Yesenia Hidalgo scored 18 points while juniors Gisele Marroquin and Destiny Morales racked up 5 and 6 steals respectively.

GPHS Basketball Game Update - Aldine

The Lady Jackets hosted Aldine High School for their first game of the 2017-2018 basketball season.  The games began with a freshman tip off at 4:00 pm on November 7th and ended with a 6:00 pm varsity start.

Freshman Team:
The freshman team lost to Aldine’s freshman by a score of 19-24.  The game was low-scoring and all Aldine as they outscored G.P. in every quarter but the fourth.  Cielo Fuentes dominated the game with 14 points and scored 8 points in the fourth quarter.  Cielo’s scoring and steals brought the Jackets within striking distance but the clock was their enemy preventing G.P. from pulling out a win.

Junior Varsity Team:
The JV team took an early 6-5 lead in the first quarter but struggled scoring in the remaining three quarters as Aldine scored 16, 10, and 8 points in the last three quarters.  Aldine kept the Jackets grounded winning 39-22.  Deysy Ramirez scored 6 points for Galena Park.

Varsity Team:
The varsity team suffered the same woes as the JV, the inability to score.  The Yellowjackets put up a mere 27 points in a 27-50 loss Tuesday night.  As lopsided as the score may be it wasn’t for a lack of effort as Galena Park had a slew of opportunities to keep the game close.  Freshman, Aniya Eason was a bright spot in the evening as she led the team with 6 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 assist.  Junior, Destiny Morales added 6 more rebounds to the tally and sophomore, Jackie Hidalgo had 4 steals bettered only by her sister, Yesenia’s 5 steals.
