GALENA PARK HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL NEWS

Galena Park High School Basketball - Willowridge

Galena Park Lady Jackets hosted the Lady Eagles of Willowridge High School for their final game of the 2016-2017 season.  Not only was this the final game of the season but it was also the final game of the four Lady Jackets seniors.

Freshman Team:
Willowridge didn’t have a freshman team so there was no freshman game.

Junior Varsity Team:
The JV team managed to play another down to the wire game this Tuesday night against Willowridge.  The Lady Jackets started slow and struggled finding the basket even though they had several scoring opportunities.  The upside was that Willowridge was finding it hard to score as well.  At the end of the first quarter neither team broke single digits as the score was 5-8 Willowridge.  The second quarter was a better offensive quarter for both teams.  Freshmen, Andrea Acosta and Jayleen Montano came off the bench in the second and brought energy and fire to the team.  Even though they Yellowjackets were still trailing by 3 points at half time they managed to match the 14 second quarter points the Eagles scored.  The third quarter was a defensive battle as both teams again found offensive hard to come by.  Galena Park held the Eagles to only 5 third quarter points and tied the game at 27-27.  The fourth quarter continued as the third had started, but the Eagles managed to pull ahead by 1 point with less than a minute remaining in the game.  With the clock running down Gisel Marroquin was fouled and sank both of her free-throws putting the Jackets up 34-33.  The Eagles had opportunities but G.P. held them off and pulled out the one point victory.  Gisel Marroquin led the Lady Jackets with 13 points while freshmen, Jackie Hidalgo, Jayleen Montano, and Andrea Acosta played well off the bench.

Varsity Team:
The night began with a tribute to the Lady Jacket parents, teachers, and seniors.  Coach Fountain, Coach Bruggeman, and Coach White recognized seniors, Jossie Enriquez, Stephanie Garcia, Abigail Gonzalez, and Nathaly Martinez for their four years of hard work and dedication.  The four seniors along with junior, Yesenia Hidalgo started the game, and Abigail Gonzalez scored a 3-pointer and Nathaly Martinez scored another 2 of the Yellowjacket’s 7 first quarter points.  Despite many opportunities the Lady Jackets neverr once managed to secure a lead against a quick and athletic Willowridge team.  Willowridge proved too fast and too physical under the basket as they controlled the game and won with a score of 60-30.  Juniors, Yesenia Hidalgo and Destinie Skinner each scored 7 points for G.P.

Galena Park High School Basketball - Texas City

The Lady Jackets hosted the Stingarees from Texas City Friday, January 27th.

Freshman Team:
The freshman team played a great game against Texas City as they defeated the Stingarees by a score of 42-25.  The Lady Jackets took a quick 12-2 first quarter lead behind the fiery shooting hand of Andrea Acosta.  The Stingarees made a run in the third quarter that cut their deficit to within two points (23-21).  The Jackets brought the defense in the fourth quarter holding Texas City to only 2 fourth quarter points while scoring another 19 points.  Andrea Acosta led the team on offense from the beginning to the end of the game.  Andrea Acosta scored 16 points and Jayleen Montano scored 11 points.

Junior Varsity Team:
The JV team started off focused and disciplined Friday night as they took a 9-8 first quarter lead.  The Lady Jackets scored another 10 points in the second quarter, but gave up 14 points as they finished the second quarter with a 19-22 deficit.  The third quarter was a tight quarter as both teams battled for the lead.  Galena Park managed to bring the score to 30-32 heading into the final quarter.  The game got rough in the fourth quarter and despite being in the game the Lady Jackets struggled with the physicality which ultimately ended with the Jackets losing 43-47.  Yadira Quintero was the defensive hammer for the Lady Jackets while Jackie Hidalgo scored 18 points and Gisel Marroquin scored 16 points.

Varsity Team:
The varsity faced off against the Stingarees this last Friday night and the game started off with a strong Yellowjacket showing.  Destinie Skinner was all the Stingarees could handle as she pounded in 17 first half points.  Destinie’s scoring and sound defense kept the Yellowjackets within 2 points (23-25) by the end of the second quarter.  The Texas City team made adjustments during the intermission to counter the scoring prowess of Skinner and those changes led to a 41-57 victory for the Stingarees.  Destinie Skinner finished the game with 29 points leading all scorers.

Galena Park High School Basketball - Elkins

Galena Park girls’ basketball hosted the Knights of Elkins High School this last Friday night in a battle against a much bigger adversary.

Freshman Team:
The freshman team started slow scoring only 6 points in the first quarter.  The second quarter proved to be a better quarter as the Yellowjackets found some composure and managed to score another 8 points to take a 14-9 lead into halftime.  The third quarter was all GPHS as the Lady Jackets nearly doubled their score and held the Lady Knights to only 4 points.  With a 27-13 lead, the Jackets relaxed too much and aggressive rebounding a second chance shots brought the game to within 4 points with less than 2 minutes remaining.  The Yellowjackets managed to find their composure and clamped down the defense holding off the Knights by a score of 30-26 and earning the only Jacket victory of the night.  Little Andrea Acosta was the leading scorer with 11 points.

JV Team:
The JV team struggled from the first whistle to the final buzzer in a 30-58 loss.  The Knights out-powered G.P. in every facet of the game.  Lorraine Garcia led the Yellowjackets with 10 points.

Varsity Team:
The Lady Jackets’ varsity team experienced much the same type of game as the JV team.  Elkins is a team with several girls exceeding 6’0” and 12 girls with a great deal of speed.  Unfortunately, the Yellowjackets had few answers and few match-ups that gave them the upper hand.  Destinie Skinner managed to pour in 16 points in the 24-71 loss.

On Deck:
The Lady Jackets will be traveling to Galveston Ball next Tuesday, January 24th.

Galena Park High School Basketball - Shadow Creek

The Lady Jackets played host to the Sharks of Shadow Creek this last Tuesday, January 10th for their second round of districts.  The night was all about the Yellowjackets as each team swarmed and stung the Sharks until victory was achieved.

Freshman Team:
The freshman team started the night off with aggressive defense that forced 11 turnovers in the first half which led to a 17-5 score.  The Lady Jackets held the Sharks to only 2 points in the entire second half and forced another 11 turnovers in the third quarter alone.  Every player stepped on the floor and made some kind of contribution in the 29-7 victory.  Jacqueline Hidalgo led all scorers with 13 points.

Junior Varsity Team:
The JV team managed to put up exactly 10 points in each of the first three quarters and held Shadow Creek to 10 points in the first half.  In the third quarter Shadow Creek made an offensive surge but the Yellowjackets held strong and finished the quarter with a 30-26 lead.  The Sharks would out score the Jackets 11-9 in the fourth but the 4 point cushion from the third was enough to seal the win.  Gisel Marroquin led the team with 20 points and Loraine Garcia’s defense and fourth quarter scoring were essential in the win.

Varsity Team:
The varsity team once again kept the fans on the edge of their seats as they pulled out a 51-49 overtime victory versus the Lady Sharks.  The first quarter was led by Destinie Skinner who scored 6 of the team’s 10 first quarter points.  The Yellowjackets went on a bit of a cold streak in the second, only scoring 5 points and ending the quarter tied 15-15.  The two teams continued to battle through the third and fourth quarters ending with a 42-42 tie at the end of regulation.  In the extra quarter, Destinie Skinner won the jump ball and G.P. immediately took the lead on a free-throw.  Then nerves and anxiety took ahold of the Yellowjackets as they allowed the Sharks to pull ahead and it looked grim.  The Shadow Creek coach called a timeout to settle down her team which also gave the Yellowjackets a moment to relax and refocus.  Galena Park came out of the timeout took control and pulled ahead only to find the score tied again with 4 seconds remaining.  Destinie Skinner received the inbounds pass and was fouled, walked up to the free throw line and sunk both shots giving G.P. the 51-49 lead.  Destinie Skinner led all scorers with 21 points 4 of which came in the over-time from the free throw line.  Yesenia Hidalgo scored 13 points.  The Lady Jackets won behind some stellar coaching by Coach Fountain and some amazing TEAM ball by every person on the team.

On Deck:
The Lady Jackets will on the road at Manvel High School this Friday, January 13th.

Galena Park High School Basketball - Santa Fe

On the final day of 2016 the Lady Jackets played host to Santa Fe High School and it was a day to celebrate.

Freshman Team:
The freshman team did not play as Santa Fe didn’t have enough girls to field a team.

Junior Varsity Team:
The JV team played a strong first quarter scoring 11 points and holding Santa Fe to 17 points, then the bench and some youth came out and provided energy in the second quarter pulling the Yellowjackets to within 6 points.  The third quarter was an entirely different story as the Yellowjackets committed turnover after turnover and rebounded poorly giving Santa Fe an 18 point advantage at the end of three.  The fourth quarter was a return to the first half of play by G.P. as they battled and played hard to pull within 7 points, but failed to finish the game losing 59-50.

Varsity Team:
The varsity team once again kept the fans on the edge of their seat battling through a tight game versus the Lady Indians.  The first quarter was led by the aggressive play of Destinie Skinner, the defense of Stephanie Garcia, and the free-throw shooting of Nathalie Martinez gave G.P. a 17-13 lead.  However, Santa Fe kept answering with offensive boards and put backs in the second quarter and pulled ahead 25-24 at halftime.  Both teams played hard in the third, but Nathalie’s shooting and Destinie and Stephanie’s defense gave the Yellowjackets a 39-35 lead headed into the fourth quarter.  The fourth quarter continued as a bucket for bucket game but outstanding team defense and clutch shooting from the field and the free throw line by Destinie Skinner gave the Jackets a 52-50 lead with 17 seconds remaining.  Solid defense prevailed and the Lady Jackets were victorious by that same two point margin.  Destinie Skinner led all scorers with 26 points and Yesenia Hidalgo added 13 points.  Nathalie Martinez and Stephanie Garcia were instrumental in the win with their defense and shooting.

On Deck:
The Lady Jackets will be returning to action in the New Year.

Galena Park High School Basketball - Galveston Ball

The Galena Park Lady Jackets hosted the Galveston Ball High Tors Friday, December 16th at Galena Park High School’s Competition Gym.

Freshman Team:
The freshman team played outstanding against Ball, winning 36-15.  The team played solid defense and out hustled the Tors all night.  Daisy Rodriguez was the leading scorer with 8 points all of which she scored in the fourth quarter.

Junior Varsity Team:
The JV team struggled again with a lack of offense and a plethora of turnovers.  The JV team averaged 6 points a quarter and gave up double digits in each quarter except the fourth where they held Ball to only 4 points.

Varsity Team:
The varsity team started off with a an early bucket by senior Stephanie Garcia but managed to put in only 1 more point the remaining 7 minutes of the quarter.  However, the Jackets gave up 26 points in the first.  Sadly, the lopsided scoring continued throughout the game as Ball won with a 17-58 score.  Senior, Jossie Enriquez was back on the floor after a brief injury hiatus and led all Yellowjackets with 5 points.

On Deck:
The Lady Jackets will be hosting Santa Fe High School on December 31st to end the 2016 year.

Galena Park High School Basketball - Manvel

The Galena Park Lady Jackets hosted the Manvel Mavericks Friday night for a district game.

Freshman Team:
The freshman team kept the game close but managed to fall short as Manvel pulled ahead 23-33 in the last quarter.  Brianna Delatorre came off the bench for the Jackets early in the first quarter and gave a spark to the defense which led to a 7-4 lead.  The second quarter was relatively evenly matched, but Galena Park did give up some points on turnovers and Manvel took a 15-16 lead into the half.  The third quarter would prove to be the Achilles heel for G.P. as they only managed to score 2 points all quarter.  The Yellowjackets fought valiantly in the fourth to overcome the third quarter deficit but it was too little too late.  Brianna Delatorre had a brilliant defensive game and contributed on the offense with some big rebounds.  Jennifer Mendez led all scorers with 16 points.

Junior Varsity Team:
The JV team trailed from the tip as the Mavericks got off to a quick 3-11 start.  The second quarter wasn’t any better to the Yellowjackets as they managed to score a single point in the second but gave up another 11 points.  Manvel had a 4-22 lead and half and just continued to build on that lead throughout the game finishing with a 19-38 win over G.P.  Galena Park did manage to hold Manvel to 5 points in the fourth and Gisel Marroquin led the Yellowjackets with 11 points.

Varsity Team:

The varsity team started slow and allowed Manvel to dictate the game pace.  Unfortunately, the Lady Jackets seemed unable to maintain the pace as they lost to Manvel 28-74.  Junior, Destinie Skinner led the team with 13 points on the night.

On Deck:

The Lady Jackets will be on the road at Elkins High School this Tuesday, December 13th beginning at 4:00 pm, and they will host Galveston Ball High School on Friday, December 16th.

Galena Park High School Basketball - Fort Bend

The Galena Park Lady Jackets hosted Fort Bend Marshall High School for a 23-5A district showdown this Tuesday night.

Freshman Team:
The freshman team took some time to find their groove but they controlled their game from the jump ball to the final buzzer.  The first half was a low scoring game as Galena Park held onto an 11-8 lead at halftime.  The second half was a better half, G.P. pulled ahead 23-19 in the third and only allowed 4 points scored in the fourth.  The freshman team earned their first home victory by a score of 35-23.  The Yellowjackets were led in scoring by Jennifer Mendez who poured in 11 points.

Junior Varsity Team:
The JV team trailed in every quarter of their first home game except the quarter that matters, the fourth!  In a game that was out of control and dominated by jump balls the Yellowjackets managed to find enough discipline to win the game 46-44.  As time ticked off in the final quarter, Marshall found themselves with only 4 players on the floor because the rest of their players were out due to foul trouble.  The Yellowjackets put Marshall’s best shooter on the line with 11 seconds left in the game and she managed to tie the game at 44 all.  Then sophomore guard, Gisel Marroquin attacked the Marshall defense and was sent to the foul line where she buried both free throws to put the Lady Jackets up 46-44 with 2 seconds left in regulation.  Marshall was unable to get a good look at the basket and Galena Park gets a home victory.  Gisel Marroquin was the leading scorer with 13 points.

Varsity Team:
The varsity team started slow but warmed up about mid-way through the first quarter as Marshall turn-overs led to easy points for the Jackets.  The first quarter ended with G.P. up 12-11.  Then the offense went ice cold as the Lady Jackets struggled to score 4 points in the second and allowing Marshall to drop in 14 points.  As the third quarter started the Lady Jackets faced a 16-25 deficit that they just couldn’t erase despite creating 29 turn-overs.  Marshall defeated Galena Park 35-52.  Junior, Destinie Skinner led all scorers with 27 points.

On Deck:
The Lady Jackets will host Manvel High School Friday, December 9th at Galena Park High School.  The freshman game will begin at 4:00 pm followed by the JV and then the varsity games.
