GPHS Football Game Update - Manvel

Freshman Team:
The freshman team battle a tough Manvel team on November 9th at Dement Field in Galena Park.  Manvel jumped to an early 6-0 lead, but the Jackets answered with a long drive ending in a touchdown run by Arturo Garcia in the next possession.  Manvel turned around and answered again with another score taking the 12-6 lead.  Arturo Garcia and his swarm stayed aggressive and broke an 87 yard touchdown run tying the game at 12.  The Yellowjackets were holding their own until the injury bug struck as quarterback, Gabe Pagan and left tackle, Gabe Puente were sidelined.  Despite the difficult odds, the young Jackets continued to fight behind the leadership of back-up quarterback, Landen Black who led a late scoring drive that ended with a 12 yard touchdown run by Arturo Garcia.  Unfortunately, the odds heavily favored Manvel and Galena Park ended the night on the wrong end of a 40-20 loss.  Arturo Garcia had three rushing touchdowns and Jonathan Gonzalez had an interception for the game.  On the season, Arturo Garcia had 14 rushing touchdowns and 1 touchdown return; Gabe Pagan had 2 passing touchdowns and 4 rushing touchdowns; Landen Black had 2 receiving touchdowns; Luis Sanchez had 3 interceptions; and Jason Maldonado had 2 forced fumbles and 3 fumble recoveries for the season.


Junior Varsity Team:
The JV team lost to Manvel 53-7.  The lone score came off a fumble recovery by Miguel Muniz who then returned the recovery for a touchdown.


Varsity Team:
The Galena Park Yellowjackets played hard in a 69-7 loss against a tough Manvel team.  Alec Gonzales had 120 yards passing and threw for one touchdown.  Jalen Davis had over 75 receiving yards and a touchdown.  Marlon McDaniel rushed for 48 yards finishing the season with over 1000 total yards rushing!
The program will begin it’s off season workouts in preparation for the 2018 season.

 

 

GPHS Football Game Update - Willowridge

Freshman Team:
The Yellowjackets’ freshman team took on Willowridge Thursday, November 2nd.  Both teams were ready to play from the first whistle. The Jackets were the first to strike on a fourth down touchdown pass from Gabe Pagan hit Landen Black.  Willowridge answered with a touchdown of their own knotting the score at 8-8.  The Jacket’s defense had a goal line stand as the first half came to an end keeping the score tied 8-8.  The third quarter was a defensive struggle until Arturo Garcia found a hole and scored on a 30 yard touchdown giving the Jackets a 14-8 lead.  The defense continued to dominate as Luis Sanchez picked his second pass of the game that led to a second long touchdown run by Arturo Garcia giving G.P. the lead 20-8.  The Eagles made things interesting as they found the end zone with 30 seconds remaining.  The Eagle onside kick bounced only 6 yards before it fell in the arms of a Yellowjacket ending the game 20-14.  Players of the game were Arturo Garcia with his two touchdown runs, Gabe Pagan and Landen Black with their pass and scoring reception, Luis Sanchez with his two interceptions, Jose Villegas with a forced fumble, and Jason.


Varsity Team:
The GPHS Yellowjackets traveled to Hall Stadium to rumble against the Willowridge Eagles in a 65-61 barn burner that unfortunately fell in favor of Willowridge High School.  Sophomore Ivan Hernandez and junior Pedro Saldana played a solid game while Elizar Torres and Austin Altwein both had an interception.  Alec Gonzalez threw for 424 yards and three touchdowns and added a rushing touchdown to his stats.  Marlon McDaniel rushed for 374 yards and 5 touchdowns and had 114 receiving yards and a touchdown.  Marlon finished with a total of 488 yards from scrimmage.  Julian Macias had 8 catches for 152 yards and a touchdown, and Julian Davis had 114 yards receiving and a touchdown.

 

 

GPHS Football Game Update - Galveston

Freshman Team:
The freshman team traveled to Galveston on the 26th of October and rode a joyous bus home as they calmed the might Tor storm, 34-6.  The Jackets faced adversity early as they fumbled on the first play from scrimmage which resulted in a touchdown for Ball.  The feisty Yellowjackets responded by scoring in the next three consecutive possessions.  Two scores came from touchdown runs by Arturo Garcia and another run by Gabe Pagan.  The defense wasn’t about to be left out of the action as they forced four turnovers that led to 20 G.P. points.  The Yellowjackets started the second half with another fumble but this time the defense squashed the Tor momentum with a Luis Sanchez interception of a lateral that he returned 50 yards.  The Sanchez interception set up the third Arturo Garcia touchdown of the game.  The Yellowjackets were relentless, the offensive line played physical, the receivers were selfless as they blocked downfield, the linebacking core made some big hits, the secondary only allowed one completion, and the defensive line recorded several tackles in the backfield.  Arturo Garcia had four touchdown runs, Gabe Pagan had one touchdown run, Luis Sanchez had two fumble recoveries and interception, and Osiel Terrones had a fumble recovery.  The offensive line manned by Ivan Martinez, Andrew Campos, Gerardo Hernandez, Alejandro Hernandez, and Huriel Espino played well all game.


Junior Varsity Team:
The JV team played Santa Fe High School on October 19th losing in a close 6-12 game.  The defense played aggressively and the Jacket offense struck first with a touchdown in the second quarter by Vincent Trevino.  The Santa Fe offense managed to push in a score late in the first half and a second in the second half as they took the lead and the victory. 


The JV team played on October 26th at home against Galveston Ball.  The offense scored twice in an attempt to manage the tempo of the game early, but two fumbles on special teams and one in the offensive backfield proved to be costly.  Galveston Ball took advantage of the Jacket miscues and scored 30 points to the Yellowjackets’ 12 points.


Varsity Team:
The GPHS Yellowjackets found themselves on the losing end of a 48-7 score last Friday evening against the Galveston Ball Tors.  The Yellowjackets did have an outstanding showing by quarterback Alec Gonzalez who threw for 180 yards and completed 60% of his passes.  Marlon McDaniel scored the only touchdown and rushed for 112 yards.  Julian Macias pulled in 60 yards worth of receptions.


On Deck:
Galena Park varsity will be at Hall Stadium to take on the Willowridge Eagles on Saturday, November 4th at 1:00 pm.  The JV team will host the Eagles on Thursday, November 2nd and the freshman will travel to Willowridge both game will start at 5:00 pm.

 

 

GPHS Football Game Update - Santa Fe

Freshman Team:
The freshman team faced off against a very talented Santa Fe team this past Thursday night.  The Jackets jumped out quickly scoring on a touchdown run by Arturo Garcia giving them an 8-0 lead.  The Indians fought back with a 24 point first half.  The Yellowjackets managed to answer Santa Fe’s scoring run with another 16 points of their own knotting the score at 24 all at halftime.  The Jackets turned the ball over twice in the second half giving opportunities to Santa Fe which they turned into 20 points.  The Yellowjackets managed to add another touchdown on an outside run by Isaiah Perales.  Sadly, a season high 32 point game for G.P. wouldn’t be enough as Santa Fe scored 52.  Arturo Garcia scored 1 touchdown, Gabe Pagan scored with a rushing touchdown and a touchdown pass and Landen Black scored with another touchdown reception.  The G.P. defense forced four turnovers during the game.


Varsity Team:
The Galena Park Yellowjackets battled the Indians of Santa Fe Friday, October 20th.  The Yellowjackets fell to the Indians by a score of 55-14.  Tony Zamora and Trinidad Gallo played solidly on the defensive side of the ball and John Juneau had a fumble recovery.  Alec Gonzalez and Julian Macias connected for a touchdown pass and Marlon McDaniel added 80 yards rushing and a touchdown.


On Deck:
Galena Park will take on Galveston Ball this next week.  The freshman and JV teams will play on Thursday, October 26th while the varsity will travel to Ball for a 7:00 pm kickoff on Friday, October 27st.

 

 

GPHS Football Game Update - Fort Bend Elkins

Freshman Team:
The freshman team battled Fort Bend Elkins on Thursday, October 5th.  The game was a grind as both teams made big plays on both sides of the ball.  Elkins struck first, but he Yellowjackets quickly responded when quarterback Gabriel Pagan broke a 47 yard touchdown run cutting the Elkins lead to 8-6.  The Jackets fell behind 16-6, but continued to compete behind another long run by Arturo Garcia that cut the lead to 16-12.  The game was physical and the Jackets fought every minute but the Knights held them off 22-12.  Defensively Jason Maldonado, Luis Sanchez and Leo Cortazo made big contributions.  On the offensive side of the ball Arturo Garcia, Gabe Pagan and Andrew Campos were the stand outs.


Varsity Team:

The Galena Park Yellowjackets traveled to Fort Bend Elkins for another district game October 6th.  The Yellowjackets were defeated by the Knights, 41-7.  Donato Elizondo and Miguel Lopez led the defense with 7 tackles each.  Mike Gaitan recorded a sack.  Alec Gonzalez threw for 146 yards and an 87 yard touchdown received by Jalen Davis.  Marlon McDaniels rushed for 129 yards. 

 

 

GPHS Football Game Update - Fort Bend Marshall

FreshmanTeam:
The Galena Park Freshmen Team had a tough test on Thursday night against Fort Bend Marshall.  The Jackets showed toughness during their game against the Buffaloes.  The game was extremely physical but the speed of the Buffs was too much for the Jackets to overcome and the Jackets lost 45-0. 

Several Jackets made some nice plays throughout the game:  Landen Black filled in at quarterback and had some nice runs; Gabe Pagan, the starting QB came back into the game after getting his hand stepped on by a cleat; Arturo Garcia ran the ball hard all night, and several Jackets stepped up and played hard in place of their injured teammates.  Luis Sanchez played tough all night at linebacker.

 

Junior Varsity Team:
The JV team hosted Fort Bend Marshall last Thursday night and managed to keep the Buffaloes within reach.  Marshall won 16-8 but it was a hard earned 16 points as the defense played “lights out” challenging Marshall on every down.  Terrance Phillips scored the lone touchdown in the third quarter that was capped with a 2-point conversion.


Varsity Team:
The Galena Park Yellowjackets traveled to Hall Stadium Friday, September 29th to face off against Thurgood Marshall High School.  It was a rough night for the Yellowjackets as they lost 57-7 to the Buffaloes.  Marlon McDaniel scored the lone touchdown on a 36 yard reception from Alec Gonzales.  Alec ended the evening 15-28 with 184 yards and Marlon ended with 102 rushing yards.  Donato Elizondo led the team in tackles.


On Deck:
The Yellowjackets will take on Fort Bend Elkins next week.  The varsity team will be playing at GPISD stadium at 7:00 pm on Friday, October 6th and the freshman team will host Elkins at Dement Field on Thursday, October 5th for a 5:00 pm kickoff.  The JV team will be traveling to Elkins for their 5:00 pm game on Thursday, October 5th.
