Area Meet

On April 20, the Varsity boys and girls competed in the 5A Area 23-24 Championships. This competitive meet features athletes who placed in the top-4 at their district meets. Briana Cavazos placed 2nd in both the 3,200 meter run and 1,600 meter run. High jumper James McGowen placed 2nd with a personal best jump of 6 feet, both athletes qualified for the regional meet. Congratulations, James and Briana!

 

District 23-5A Championships

On the week of April 10th – 13th, the Galena Park Lady Jacket Junior Varsity and Varsity team competed in the district meet. The JV team all competed hard and was able to place second in a very competitive district meet. In the 1600m run, Savannah Rios finished in first, Yaref Moreno 3rd and Natalie Torres 4th. In the 3200m run Savannah Rios placed first, Natalie Torres placed 3rd and Yaref Moreno placed 4th. In the 100m hurdles, Cristal Reyna placed 1st with Gissel Marroquin coming in at 3rd. In the 800m run Diana Meza placed 5th. In the 300m hurdles, Cristal Reyna was able to medal again by finishing in 2nd while Gissel Marroquin placed 3rd. The 4x400m relay team placed 5th.  In the field events, Mackenzie Dearing placed 1st with Kylah Evans placing 4th. In the Shot Put, Kylah Evans placed 2nd and Mackenzie Dearing placed 5th. All of the girls performed well and gave their all to finish off the season.

           

For the Varsity Girls team, Qualifying for area in two events was Briana Cavazos who placed 2nd in both the 3200m and 1600m run. Briana will be competing in area meet Thursday to qualify for Regionals. The 4x400 team of Jessica Hernandez, Briana Cavazos, Shelby Loya, and Adriana Cano were able to place 5th.

 

The Freshman team finished 5th in district with a total of 62 points. Top freshman performers included Eli Quintero, who placed 1st in the long jump, 3rd in the triple jump, and 6th in the 100m dash, and Terrence Phillips, who took 2nd in the triple jump, 3rd in the long jump, and 5th in the 200m dash.

The Junior Varsity team also finished 5th in district with a score of 78 points. Top JV performers included Eduardo Minjares, who took 1st in both the 1600m run and 3200m run, Ray Ybarra, who earned 1st in the shot put and 4th in the discus, Marlon McDaniel, who won 1st in the 200m dash, and Jaylon Roberts, who placed 1st in the 400m dash.

Our varsity team earned 8th in district with a score of 9 points. Top performers were James McGowen, who tied for 3rd in high jump, and Adrian Avila, who took 4th in discus. Both of these athletes qualified for the Area Meet!

 

Week # 7

On March 30, the Galena Park Lady Yellow Jacket track team travelled to the Travis High School Invitational Relays. The ladies placed 8th in the meet. Briana Cavazos placed 4th in the 3,200m. In the 400m dash Aalliyah Duncan placed 8th out of 18 competitors. In the 4x400m relay team, the team of Shelby Loya, Adriana Cano, Melissa Garcia, and Aalliyah Duncan placed 4th. Overall the girls worked hard and did well.

 

The Boys top performer was Marlon McDaniel, who placed 5th in the 200 meter dash and helped the 4x200 meter and 4x100 meter relays earn 5th and 6th, respectively.  Next week, all levels will compete in the UIL District 23-5A track meet at Hall Stadium.

 

Week # 6

On Friday March 24 the Galena Park Lady Yellow Jackets track team travelled to C.E. King High School to compete. A top performer of the meet was Briana Cavazos who placed 1st in the 3200m and 2nd in the 1600m. Adriana Cano did well placing 4th out of 19 in the 400m dash. Cristal Reyna also did well in the 100m hurdles where she placed 3rd. Astrie Fuentes placed 4th in the high jump with a jump of 4-8.

 

On March 24, the Varsity Boys traveled to C.E. King High School for the Panther Relays. The team placed 7th overall with 64 points. Our jumpers led the team, with Terrence Phillips winning the triple jump and James McGowen winning the high jump.

 

Week # 5

On Wednesday March 8th the Galena Park Lady Jackets JV track team competed in their annually hosted track meet. The team performed well and tied for first in the meet with 163 points. Astrie Fuentes placed first in the high jump, Mackenzie Dearing placed 1st in discus, Savannah Rios placed 1st in the 3,200, in the 300m hurdle Cristal Reyna placed 1st and Andrea Acosta placed 1st in the 1,600.

The varsity track meet on Friday March 10th was cut short due to rain lightning, only Briana Cavazos was able to complete in the 3,200 and she placed first and set a personal best time of 12:11.10.

 

The JV Boys took 4th place overall while the Freshman Boys won their division by an impressive 58 points. Top JV performers were Tristian Garcia, who won the 3200m, and Luis Vasquez, who won the 1600m run. Top freshman performers included Eli Quintero, who won the long jump and earned 2nd in the triple jump, 400m relay, and 800m relay, and Jayden Morin, who won the 800m run and 1600m run.

On March 10th, the Varsity Boys travelled to Aldine’s Smith Stadium for the highly competitive Donaldson Relays. Unfortunately, the meet was canceled halfway through due to weather. Top performers included Eduardo Minjares, who placed 12th in the 3200m run, and Ray Garcia-Ybarra, who finished 11th in the shot put.

 

Week # 4

On the 3rd the Varsity Lady Jackets track team travelled to Santa Fe High School where they placed 6th out of 11 teams in their 4th track meet of the season. In field events, Kyla Evans placed 4th in the shot put. In the 100m hurdles, Cristal Reyna placed 3rd.  Briana Cavazos earned the most points for the team placing 3rd in the 3200m as well as in the 800m and 5th in the 1600m.

 

On March 2nd, the JV and Freshman boys traveled to Humble High School. Top performers included Terrence Phillips, who won the Freshman triple jump and 200m dash, Eli Quintero, who won the Freshman long jump and took 2nd on the 200m dash. On March 3rd, the Varsity boys competed at Santa Fe High School. Top performers included Albert Henry and Jaylon Roberts, who finished 5th in the 200m dash, and 400m dash.

 

Week # 3

On Friday February 24, the Galena Park Varsity Lady Jacket track team travelled to Caney Creek High school where they placed 4th out of 6 teams. Adriana Cano did well in the 400m dash placing 2nd.  Top performer for the meet was Briana Cavazos who placed 3rd in the 1600m and 2nd in the 3200m. Also, Cristal Reyna placed 2nd in the 100m hurdle and 3rd in the 300m hurdle.

 

On February 23rd, the JV and Freshman boys traveled to Dayton High School. Our top performer was newcomer Patrick Hernandez, who finished 2nd in the Freshman 110m hurdles and 3rd in the 300m hurdles.

On February 24th, the Varsity boys competed in the Caney Creek Panther Invitational. The team placed 4th overall with 77.5 points. Top performers included Alberto Cruz, who won the 3200m run and finished 3rd and the 1600m run, James McGowen, who tied for 2nd in the high jump, and Ray Ybarra, who tied for 3rd in the shot put.

 

 

Week # 2

On Thursday February 16th the Galena Park Lady Jackets JV track athletes traveled to Goose Creek Memorial to compete in the second meet of the season. Overall, the girls did well placing 3rd out of 6 teams. Some highlights were Lorraine Garcia placing first in the high jump, Yaref Moreno placed 2nd 1,600m, Diana Meza hit her personal best in the 800m dash while placing 3rd and Jackie Hildago also placed 2nd in the 100m hurdles with this being her first time competing in this event. Both Boys teams excelled across several events and finished 2nd in the team competition. Top individual performers included Tristian Garcia and Jayden Morin.

 

The Varsity Lady Jackets travelled to the Ft Bend Marshall Buffalo Relays on Saturday February 18th. They worked hard, did well and finished in 2nd place out of 8 teams. Top performer was Briana Cavazos who finished 2nd in the 1,600m and 1st in the 3,200m. Cristal Reyna placed 2nd in both the 100m and 300m hurdles and Long Jump and was a member of the 4x200m relay team that placed third. Up next the Jackets will travel to Caney Creek High School. The Boys took 2nd in a true team effort that saw us earn medals in all phases of the meet (sprints, distance, hurdles, jumps, throws). Top performers included Marlon McDaniel and Adrian Avila.

Week # 1

On Thursday February 9 the JV Lady Yellow Jackets track athletes competed at Crosby High School for their first meet of the season. Cristal Reyna opened up the season with her personal best in hurdles earning two silver and one bronze metal. She was also the top performer for the Lady Jackets. On Friday the Varsity Lady Jackets competed at Clear Brook High School relay only. The Lady Jackets finished 14th out of 27 teams with 10 of the 14 ahead being 6a schools. The 4x400 and the 4x1600 relay teams competed very well with Briana Cavazos being the top performer for the Lady Jackets.

 

This week, the JV and freshman boys competed at Crosby High School. With a small team competing, our top performer was newcomer Jayden Morin, who won silver medals in the freshman 800m and 1600m. Meanwhile, Varsity went to the Clear Brook Relays, a unique meet that features only relay events. Although none of our relays placed against a highly competitive field, everyone ran hard in their first meet of the season. Our top performers were Alberto Cruz, who ran 4:58 for his leg of the 4x1600m relay, and Marlon McDaniel, who impressed in the 4x100m and Sprint Medley Relay. Next week, JV and freshman will run on Thursday at Goose Creek Memorial HS, while Varsity will compete on Saturday at Fort Bend Marshall HS.
