GPHS Volleyball Awards Banquet

The GPHS Volleyball program hosted their awards banquet Tuesday, May 19th. The banquet was an opportunity to share the many successes of the young ladies who competed during the 2014-2015 volleyball season. It was a wonderful night of great Italian food catered by Johnny Carinos, delicious cake, and fellowship among athletes, family, and coaches.

GPHS Volleyball Alumni

Tiphani Funk graduated from Galena Park High School in 2011 and went on to compete at the collegiate level in Shawnee, Oklahoma at St. Gregory’s University.  As a GPHS Yellowjacket, Tiphani was a four year varsity started who earned Newcomer of the Year her freshman season, second-team All-District her sophomore year and first-team All-District in both her junior and senior seasons.

This last volleyball season, Tiphani’s senior year, she was recognized as a Cavalier featured athlete.  Tiphani has become one of St. Gregory’s most consistent attackers during her time at St. Gregory’s.  She is a two-time honorable mention All-SAC player, and totaled a team-leading 228 kills her junior year – a career high.  Tiphani was second on the team in digs with 206 and third in both blocks with 29 and service aces with 17 in 2013.  She played in 27 matches her sophomore year and was second on the team with 176 kills and played in 26 matches her freshman year with 126 kills.

GPHS Volleyball Post Season Honors
Congratulations to the following varsity Lady Jackets for earning 21-5A All-District Honors for the 2014 season.

Sophomore, Alana Perez received 1st Team All-District Honors.  Alana is a 2nd year varsity starter who went from role player as a freshman to dominating the floor as a sophomore.  Alana brings the “whole package” to the program; she is the go to hitter on offense, can block all three positions, plays fantastic defense, is the primary passer off serve, and can place the ball anywhere when serving.  Alana played in all 100 games this season, served 89% with 60 service aces; she had an 87% passer rating, 449 digs and 15 blocks.

Senior, Yesenia Pulido received 2nd Team All-District Honors.  Yesenia played on the JV team her freshman year at GPHS.  Then suffered ACL tears both her sophomore and junior years and was unable to compete at any level.  This year she came to the coaching staff physically prepared for competition but two years down in experience.  For most athletes this would have been a tough obstacle to overcome, but not Yesenia.  Not only did she compete but by the end of the season she dominated as a middle blocker and had developed her defensive game in the back court.  Yesenia played in all 100 games, served 88% with 18 service aces; she had an 83% passer rating, 192 digs and 36 blocks.

Junior, Katera Johnson received Honorable Mention Honors.  Katera is a 1st year varsity starter who started the season sharing the setting work but due to injury was asked to carry the offensive load for most the season.  Katera made progress as a setter every game and by the end of the season put the ball where our hitters could finish the play.  Katera played in 99 of the 100 games played this season, served 93% and had 14 aces; she had 164 digs, set the ball 1662 times and had 377 assists.

Junior, Taylor Dearing received Honorable Mention Honors.  Taylor is a 2nd year varsity starter who started has a setter her sophomore year and was asked to play setter, pin hitter, and libero this season.  Taylor did a great job tackling whatever assignment the coaching staff gave her and made an impact every game.  We are especially proud of her stepping into the libero position late in the season and owning the position.  Taylor played 99 out of the 100 games played, she served 93% for the season and had 27 aces; she had an 87% passer rating, had 307 digs and 11 blocks.

The 21-5A District also recognizes those who maintained a 90% or above during the entire season.  Galena Park High School’s entire varsity team earned Academic All-District Honors.  Congratulations to: senior, Yesenia Pulido; juniors, Katera Johnson, Anne Bamba, Taylor Dearing, Gabby Flores, and Stephanie Sarmiento, and sophomores, Alana Perez, Christina Herrera, and MacKenzie Swanson.
