Woodland Acres Basketball Update - Cunningham

7th Grade Gold Team:
The Gold team defeated the Cunningham Lady Cats in double overtime by a score of 22-20!  After an eventful first half where both Gabby Munoz and Kimberly Nieto jumpstarted the Hornet machine with their scoring.  Rubi Montano drained a three-pointer to tie the game and made another as the buzzer sounded.  Ashlyn Hadnott, Ashley Esquivel, Ashley Garcia and Genisis Heinaman all contributed on both sides of the ball during overtime.  Ashlyn Hadnott got the defensive player nod from Coach Figliulo while Gabby Munoz and Rubi Montano locked down the offensive player recognition.

 

7th Grade Black Team:

The Black team lost to Cunningham 11-27.

 

8th Grade Gold Team:

The Gold team lost to Cunningham 2-46.

 

8th Grade Black Team:
The Black team lost to Cunningham Middle School 20-35 after a strong Hornet start and early three point lead.  The Wildcats athleticism and size proved to be more than the Hornets could match as they Wildcats outscored WAMS 22-9 in second half.  Leslie and Larisa Vasquez had an outstanding defensive performance from tip off to final buzzer.

 

 

Woodland Acres Basketball Update - Galena Park

On January 29th the Lady Hornets traveled to Galena Park High School for the yearly showdown between the Woodland Acres program and the Galena Park program.


7th Grade Gold Team:
The Gold team defeated the Yellowjackets of Galena Park in a low scoring (7-4) game.  Rubi Montano, Andrea Beltran, Gabby Munoz and Genesis Heinaman did the scoring for the Hornets.  The gold team finished their season with a 6-1 district record and an 8-2 season record.  Rubi Montano was the MVP for the night; Andrea Beltran was the defensive player and offensively Gabby Munoz and Genesis Heinaman earned recognition.

 

8th Grade Black Team:
The Black team finished off the season with a strong performance and victory over the Yellowjackets.  The Hornets entered the fourth quarter of play tied at 20-20 with a defensive determination that stymied the Yellowjacket offense as they went on to win 27-24.  Haven Hernandez and Leslie Vasquez led the team with 8 points each.  Leslie and Larisa Vasquez dominated on defense causing many turnovers that led to scoring opportunities.

 

 

Woodland Acres Basketball Update - Alice Johnson

7th Grade Gold Team:
The Gold team defeated Alice Johnson by a score of 17-8.  All the girls worked together to move the ball down the court.  Kimberly Nieto led all scorers with 9 points.  Gabby Munoz and Rubi Montano also helped Kimberly on the offensive end of the court.

 

7th Grade Black Team:
The Black team lost to Alice Johnson by a score of 9-25.


8th Grade Gold Team:
The Gold team lost 5-42 to Alice Johnson.


8th Grade Black Team:
The Black team experienced a blow out on their home court versus Alice Johnson.  The Hornets had many opportunities but the shots didn’t fall and Alice Johnson couldn’t seem to miss.  Alice Johnson managed to finish off WAMS 16-43.  Leslie and Larisa Vasquez, as well as Priscilla Enriquez, had 10 steals each and battle all game.

 

 

Woodland Acres Basketball Update - North Shore Middle

On December 4th the Woodland Acres Lady Hornets went up against North Shore Middle School.


7th Grade Gold Team:
The Gold team lost to North Shore Middle School by a score of 8-28.

 

7th Grade Black Team:
The Black team lost to North Shore Middle School by a score of 20-45.


8th Grade Gold Team:
The Gold team lost to North Shore 26-22.

 

8th Grade Black Team:
The Black team experienced their first loss to North Shore by a score of 20-45.  The Hornets failed to knock down the wide open shots the Mustang defense gave them and failed to stop the Mustangs on offense.  A combination of weak defense and a poor shooting night led to a loss for the Hornets.  Leslie Vasquez led the team in scoring with 11 points and Emily Camacho had her career best night with 6 points.

The WAMS basketball teams will be back in action after the Christmas break versus Alice Johnson Middle School.

 

 

Woodland Acres Basketball Update - C.E. King

On Monday, December 4th the Woodland Acres Lady Hornets went up against C.E. King Middle School.


7th Grade Gold Team:
The Gold team lost to C.E. King 8-17.

 

7th Grade Black Team:
The Black team lost to C.E. King 4-31.


8th Grade Gold Team:
The Gold team lost to C.E. King 14-18.

 

8th Grade Black Team:
The Black team defeated to C.E. King 26-13 this past Monday night.  The Lady Hornets outscored King 17 to 5 in the second half with all of King’s points made in the last two minutes of the game.  Crystal Garcia led all scorers with 10 points and Julissa Fematt shot 100% from the line.

The Woodland Acres Middle School will be playing North Shore next.

 

 

Woodland Acres Basketball Update - Null Middle School

The Woodland Acres Middle School matched their hard wood skills against Null Middle School, on November 29th.


7th Grade Gold Team:
The Gold team dominated Null Middle School defeating them by a score of 38-6.  The entire team played exceptional!  Kimberly Nieto scored an amazing 14 points off of layups and offensive rebounds.  Gabby Munoz and Rubi Montano also added some buckets to aid the Hornets in their victory.

 

7th Grade Black Team:
The Black team lost to Null Middle School by a score of 22-35.


8th Grade Gold Team:
The Gold team lost to Null by a score of 8-22.

 

8th Grade Black Team:
The Black team played one of the most exciting Woodland games in recent memory, defeating Null 33-31 in double overtime.  Starting the second half down 11 points the Lady Hornets fought their way back into the game.  In the end the Lady Hornets came home with a victory even though they left Null bruised from the very aggressive play.

The Hornets will be competing against C.E. King Middle School on Monday, December 4th.

 

 

Woodland Acres Basketball Update - Galena Park Middle

On November 13th the Woodland Acres Lady Hornets scrimmaged the Galena Park Middle School Yellowjackets.


7th Grade Gold Team:
The Gold team defeated the Yellowjackets of Galena Park by a score of 21-7.


8th Grade Black Team:
The Black team lost to Galena Park 31-0 in their first match-up of the season.


8th Grade Gold Team:
The Gold team scored took a loss in their first outing of the 2017-2018 season as the Galena Park Yellowjackets defeated the team 23-9.

 

8th Grade Black Team:
The Black team started their 2017-2017 season with a win against the Galena Park Yellowjackets.  The Hornets out-lasted the Jackets as they only allowed 3 points in the fourth quarter.  The Hornets ended the evening with a 27-19 victory.  Haven Hernandez, Larisa Vasquez, and Leslie Vasquez accounted for 23 of the 27 points.

 

 

Woodland Acres Basketball Update - Galena Park Middle

January 31st, the Woodland Acres Lady Hornet stepped on the GPHS hardwood in their final basketball game of 2017.


7th Grade Gold Team:
The Gold team lost to GPMS 7-16 Monday night.

 

7th Grade Black Team:
The Black team saved their best game of the season for their finale as they won 16-15!


8th Grade Gold Team:
The Gold team played a solid three quarters but were outscored 8-3 in the fourth as they lost to GPMS 18-25.  JuJu Median, Frida Ibarra, Yahaira Ambriz, Lessly Nino, and Jimena Amezquita all contributed to the scoring.

 

8th Grade Black Team:
The Black team competed and lost to GPMS by a score of 33-42 this last Monday night.  The Hornets started off strong as the dominated with their quick defense.  The Hornets were down by just 5 points at the intermission, but miscommunication and unforced errors ultimately ended in a Galena Park victory.  Defensively, the Hornets were led by Nohelia Garcia and Andrea Padron.  Aileen Castro and Emily “Cha Cha” Escudero led the team on offense.  Jacky Diaz earned the MVP honors from Coach Simms for her quick hands and leadership on the floor.


On Deck:
The WAMS Lady Hornets will trade in their court shoes for a pair of running cleats as they prepare for track. 

 

 

Woodland Acres Basketball Update - Cunningham

On January 23rd, the Woodland Acres Lady Hornets matched their basketball skills with the Cunningham Lady Wildcats.


7th Grade Gold Team:

The Gold team lost a rough game 4-41.

 

7th Grade Black Team:

The Black team lost to Cunningham 11-40.

 

8th Grade Gold Team:

The Gold team lost to Cunningham 16-46.  The game started with the worst quarter of the season that ended with a 20-0 Cunningham lead.  The next three quarters were the best of the young Hornets’ season as they tried to battle back from a large deficit.  They ended the game short, but not for a lack of effort against a dynamic Cunningham squad.  Jimena Amezquita played her best game of the season scoring 15 points!

 

8th Grade Black Team:
The Black team lost to Cunningham Middle School in a high scoring 43-59 game.  Cunningham came out hot and fast taking a 14-0 lead early, but the Hornets fought back and nearly evened up the score before the intermission.  The Hornets moved the ball well on offense and minimized their turnovers keeping them within striking distance until the end of the game.  Defensively, Emily “Cha Cha” Escudero and Jacky Diaz made things difficult for the Wildcat offense.  Natalie Macias and Jerimya Buchanan made the most of their opportunities on offense.

The WAMS basketball teams will be taking on the Lady Yellowjackets of Galena Park Middle School Monday, January 31st. 

 

 

Woodland Acres Basketball Update - Alice Johnson

On January 9th the Woodland Acres Lady Hornets battled the blue and yellow Hornets of Alice Johnson Middle School.


7th Grade Gold Team:
The Gold team lost to Alice Johnson by a score of 5-17.

 

7th Grade Black Team:
The Black team lost to Alice Johnson by a score of 7-17.


8th Grade Gold Team:
The Gold team had a rough night against Alice Johnson as the young team continued to struggle getting started.  The second half of the game was a better half as WAMS scored all 7 points in the second half.  Alice Johnson was able to keep the offensive pressure on throughout as they defeated WAMS 7-24.  Lesly Nino, Jimena Amezquita, and Ashley Maldonado all scored for the Hornets.


8th Grade Black Team:
The Black team competed against and lost to Alice Johnson by a score of 16-41.  The Lady Hornets held strong in the first half keeping within striking distance of the A.J. Hornets.  By halftime the Lady Hornets had managed to get within 9 points of Alice Johnson.  The Lady Hornets struggled from the free throw line scoring only 2 of 8 attempts and Alice Johnson offense eventually overwhelmed the young Hornets.  Defensively, Rocio Garza and Jerimya Buchannan played well for WAMS while Aileen Castro and Jerimya Buchannan contributed offensively.


On Deck:
The WAMS basketball teams will be back in action on January 18th versus Anthony Aguirre Middle School.

 

 

Woodland Acres Basketball Update - North Shore Middle

On December 12th the Woodland Acres Lady Hornets went up against North Shore Middle School.


7th Grade Gold Team:
The Gold team lost to North Shore Middle School by a score of 22-4.

 

7th Grade Black Team:
The Black team lost to North Shore Middle School by a score of36-11.


8th Grade Gold Team:
The Gold team lost to North Shore 26-12 Monday night.  It was a sluggish first half that created a deficit too big to overcome even with the improved scoring in the second half.  JuJu Medina, Jimena Amezquita, and Ashley Maldonado all contributed to the Hornets’ scoring efforts.

 

8th Grade Black Team:
The Black team lost to a tough North Shore opponent by a score of 42-8.  The game started slow for the Hornets, but by the second quarter the shots began to fall.  However, the Hornets were committed too many fouls and put North Shore on the line adding to the deficit.  At the end of the game two starters were on the bench due to fouls and Natalie Macias and Aileen Castro really had to step up on both sides of the ball.  Rocio Garza and Jerimya Buchannan made impacts on the defense while offensively Emily Lopez made some big contributions.

Woodland Acres Basketball Update - C.E. King

On Monday, December 6th the Woodland Acres Lady Hornets went up against C.E. King Middle School.


7th Grade Gold Team:
The Gold team defeated C.E. King 11-4.

 

7th Grade Black Team:
The Black team lost to C.E. King 16-26.


8th Grade Gold Team:
The Gold team lost a close game to C.E. King by a score of 8-14.  The Lady Hornets played nearly four solid quarters of basketball before giving up 6 points in the final minute of the game.  Defensive miscues and poor boxing out continue to plague the young Hornets.  Adriana Vasquez, JuJu Medina, Jimena Amezquita, and Victoria Martinez all contributed to the Hornet’s scoring.

 

8th Grade Black Team:
The Black team lost to C.E. King 23-44 this past Monday night.  They started the game strong staying within 3 points at the end of the first and tying the game at halftime.  The second half was a different story, King ran off 14 points and dominated the Lady Hornets for the rest of the game.  Natalie Macias shot 50% from the charity stripe scoring 14 point for the Hornets.  Jerimya Buchannan played aggressively on offense while Jacky Diaz played tough defensively.


On Deck:
The 8th grade black team will be playing at Cunningham Middle School this Saturday, December 10th.  Both the 7th and 8th grade teams will meet North Shore Middle School on Monday, December 12th.

 

 

Woodland Acres Basketball Update - Null Middle School

The Woodland Acres Middle School matched their hard wood skills against Null Middle School, on November 30th.


7th Grade Gold Team:
The Gold team lost to Null Middle School by a score of 10-16.

 

7th Grade Black Team:
The Black team lost to Null Middle School by a score of 12-44.


8th Grade Gold Team:
The Gold team lost to Null by a score of 21-11 after three quarters of tight play between the two teams.  The WAMS girls managed to keep the score within 4 points until the fourth quarter where turn-overs and poor transition defense ultimately cost the Hornets the game.  Ashley Maldonado, Frida Ibarra, and Lesly Nino scored points for the Hornets.

 

8th Grade Black Team:
The Black team dominated the Null Stallions from the gate.  The Hornets buzzed up and down the floor four all four quarters ending with a 30-11 victory.  The Lady Hornets played aggressively on defense keeping the Stallions from controlling the game offensively and creating offensive opportunities for themselves.  Natalie Macias led the Hornets with 14 points while Jerimya Buchannan and Aileen Castro added another 6 points of their own.  Jerimya Buchannan and Aileen Castro were named the defensive players of the game while Aileen Castro and Emily Escudero were named offensive players of the game.

The Hornets will be competing against C.E. King Middle School on Monday, December 5th.

 

 

Woodland Acres Basketball Update - Galena Park Middle

On November 14th the Woodland Acres Lady Hornets scrimmaged the Galena Park Middle School Yellowjackets.


8th Grade Gold Team:
The Gold team scored a quick two baskets in the first fifteen seconds of the scrimmage and it appeared that it would be a solid beginning to their young season.  Alas, reality set and a lack of rebounding and poor defensive transition cost the Lady Hornets.  GPMS defeated WAMS 31-12 in their first outing of the 2016-2017 season.  Jimena Amezquita led the Hornets with 6 points, Victoria Martinez had 4 points and Abriana Vasquez had 2 points.

 

8th Grade Black Team:
The Black team started their 2016-2017 with a great deal of energy and enthusiasm.  That energy translated into some long possessions on the offensive side and some steals that led to points on the defensive side.  Andrea Padron was a blazing star on defense as she had many deflections and steals throughout the scrimmage.  Natalie Macias added points to the WAMS side of the scoreboard with her aggressive, no holds barred penetration into the heart of the Yellowjacket defense.  Aileen Castro was a firecracker for the Hornets as her quickness and anticipation gave the Hornets energy.  Aileen also capped off her evening with a three-point shot.  Monday night was a good test of where the Lady Hornets are early in this season and even though they lost 29-37 a strong foundation has been laid.  Andrea Padron and Aileen Castro earned accolades for their defensive play and Emily Escudero and Jerimya Buchannan earned offensive recognition.
