WAMS Football Game Update - Galena Park Middle

On Tuesday, November 1st the Woodland Acres Middle School Hornets competed against the Galena Park Middle School Yellowjackets at Dement Field for their final game of the 2016 season.


7th Grade Gold Team:
The Gold team battled all night Tuesday trying to make positive plays but unforced errors hindered the Hornets as the fell to the Yellowjackets 0-33.  The defense worked hard trying to keep the team in the game while the offense tried to correct their miscues but it was just too much to overcome.  Adiel Cortazo was the offensive player and Victor Galarza was the defensive player.


7th Grade Black Team:
The Black team played hard in their final game of the season.  The Hornets managed to march down the field on two occasions and score taking a lead early.  However, the Yellowjackets managed to cut the deficit in half with a score of their own and ultimately re-take the lead by halftime.  The Hornets came out of the locker room in the second half with determination and a plan, but an injury to a key player dampened the mood of both the offense and the defense.  GPMS held their lead and defeated WAMS 13-26.  Alex Gutierrez and Oscar Nunez were the offensive players.  Jonathan Rojas and Matthew Olmeda were the defensive players.


8th Grade Gold Team:
The Gold team succumbed to too many self-inflicted mistakes Tuesday night resulting in a 0-37 loss to Galena Park Middle School.  Offensively, Daehan Gonzales gained yards and made positive plays while Christian Vargas collected some tackles for the defense.


8th Grade Black Team:
The Black team won a close, hard fought game by a score of 6-0.  The score should have been higher but several would be touchdowns were negated by penalties.  Offensively, Antonio Zamora, Arturo Garcia, Logan Fajardo, and John Victoria all played essential roles in making the offense successful throughout the game.  Brice Hernandez was a monster on defense.  Brice had an interception and several tackles.  Congratulations Hornets for winning the South Side Battle Royal!

 

 

WAMS Football Game Update - Cunningham Middle

The Woodland Acres football program went up against the Cunningham Middle School football teams this last Tuesday night.

 

7th Grade Gold Team:
The Gold team lost to Cunningham 0-51 in a very difficult game.  The Hornets struggled badly in the first half on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball.  The second half was an improvement but the damage had been done.  Alejandro Garcia, Jacob Garcia and Marcus Fonseca were the offensive MVP’s of the evening.  Jayden Valdes and Victor Galarza were the defensive MVP’s of the night.

 

7th Grade Black Team:
The Black team lost to Cunningham 12-40 which is an improvement over last year’s shutout.  The Hornets stepped on the field and competed from the first whistle until the final buzzer sounded.  The Hornets displayed a great deal of heart and fortitude as they were matched against a dominating opponent.  The offense stayed balanced mixing up the run and passing plays yielding some big plays and a couple of trips to the end zone.  The defense battled in the trenches the entire game and for a time gained ground, but the Cunningham offense would prove to be too much in the end as the Hornets fell 12-40.  Alex Gutierrez and Bernardo Vazquez earned offensive MVP honors while Oscar Nunez and Carl Niemi earned the defensive MVP honors.

 

8th Grade Gold Team:
The Gold team lost to Cunningham by a score of 0-58.  The Hornets struggled on both sides of the line of scrimmage all game.  Christian Vargas made a few tackles on defense and Jorge Rodriguez had an interception.  Francisco Reyna earned the offensive player honors and Jorge and Christian shared the defensive honors.

 

8th Grade Black Team:
The Black team was defeated 0-49 by Cunningham Tuesday night.  The Hornets started off well but never found the end zone and couldn’t cover the pass on defense.  Arturo Garcia was the offensive player and Brice Hernandez was the defensive player.

The WAMS football teams will complete their season versus the Galena Park Yellowjackets.

 

 

WAMS Football Game Update - Anthony Aguirre

The Woodland Acres football program went up against Anthony Aguirre Middle School football teams this week.


7th Grade Gold Team:
The Gold team played a great game against the Bulldogs but fell short as the Hornets took the 6-14 defeat.  The offense was aggressive and made some fabulous plays on the ground with long run after long run.  The Hornets managed to move the ball for long possessions giving them the opportunity for a win, unfortunately they struggled on some key stops and the Bulldogs managed to pull out the victory.  Alejandro Garcia was the offensive MVP and Jacob Garcia was the defensive MVP.


7th Grade Black Team:
The Black team played a much improved game from last week with significant improvement from several key players.  The improvements led to the Hornets first victory of the season by a score of 14-13.  The offense started off the game moving the ball well, but turned over the ball on fumbles twice.  The Aguirre Bulldogs capitalized on the Hornet misfortunes with two easy scores.  As the time was winding down in the first half the Hornets scored on a kickoff cutting the Bulldog lead in half.  The second half was all about the defense as they forced a fumble and two interceptions giving the offense an opportunity which ended in a score.  The Hornet’s secured the victory and plan to carry this momentum into next week against Cunningham Middle School.  Offense MVP honors went out to Oscar Nunez and Alex Gutierrez.  Defensive MVP honors went out to Carl Niemi and Fabian Cosme.


8th Grade Gold Team:

The Gold team suffered another loss of 6-33 to the Aguirre Bulldogs.  The team played better, especially in the second half, but it wasn’t enough for a win.  Francisco Reyna, Noel Lezama, Leo Cortazo, and Alejandro Saenz all showed promise on the offensive side of the ball.  Ruben Nunez played well defensively making some tackles.


8th Grade Black Team:
The Black team played another great game this week against Anthony Aguirre Middle School bringing home a 16-6 victory.  The first half was rough, but the team ramped up the energy in the second half and held on for the win.  Alfredo Martinez and Mauricio Perez played solidly on the offensive line sealing the edge.  Arturo Garcia and Antonio Zamora did well pacing the offense and moving the chains.  Defensively, Edgar Rios and Oscar Galvan pressure the Bulldog offense resulting in two force fumbles by Rios and two recoveries by Galvan.  Brice Hernandez, Mauricio Perez, and Gerardo Hernandez shored up the middle of the defense.

The WAMS football teams will compete against the Wildcats of Cunningham Middle School this upcoming week.

 

 

WAMS Football Game Update - Alice Johnson

The Woodland Acres football program battled Alice Johnson October 11th.


7th Grade Gold Team:
The Gold team started off lethargic allowing Alice Johnson on the board with two, quick scores.  As the game wore on the Hornets made adjustments and improvements on both sides of the ball.  The offense made plays that extended drives, but couldn’t finish with points.  The defense turned around their intensity after giving up some easy scores.  Alice Johnson won 0-22.  David Martinez earned offensive player honors and Jaden Valdes earned defensive player honors.


7th Grade Black Team:
The Black team played a much improved game from last week’s despite the 0-28 score.  The offense made significant strides from last week as they got off to a solid start and moved the ball better with each series.  The defense played a hard-hitting second half making some key plays and forcing a fumble.  Offensively, Alexander Gutierrez earned MVP honors and Bryan Chavarria earned defensive MVP honors.


8th Grade Gold Team:
The Gold team battled this last Thursday night, but fell short of victory as Alice Johnson won 0-18.  Leo Cortazo ran hard earning rushing yards for the Hornets’ offense.  Ismael Rodriguez snagged a couple of receptions in the 2nd half but the Hornets failed to capitalize.  Aldo Garza and Ruben Nunez made some big tackles slowing down the Alice Johnson offense.  Offensive MVP status went to Leonel Cortazo and defensively Aldo Garza earned the MVP honors. 


8th Grade Black Team:

The Black team won a low-scoring 7-0 game against Alice Johnson as they bounced back from last week’s loss.  The defense was electric as they held Alice Johnson scoreless.  Offensively, Antonio Zamora led the Hornets at the quarterback position, and he scored the only points of the game.  Offensively, the coaches gave kudos to Antonio Zamora and love was given to the entire defensive unit for their “shut out”.

The WAMS football teams will compete against Anthony Aguirre Middle School next Tuesday, October 18th.

 

 

WAMS Football Game Update - North Shore Middle

The Woodland Acres football program competed against North Shore Middle School, Tuesday October 4th.


7th Grade Gold Team:
The Gold team lost to North Shore 36-0.  The young Hornets played a tough game against a more athletic and more physical Mustang team.  The Hornets tried to move the ball, but the physical disparity between the teams kept North Shore with the advantage and the ball most of the game.  Alejandro Garcia was the offensive MVP and Jacob Garcia was the defensive MVP.


7th Grade Black Team:
The Black team lost to North Shore 28-0, but was much improved over the previous week’s showing.  The offense managed to control the time of possession for portions of the game, but didn’t capitalize on opportunities.  The defense was fast and aggressive as well.  Jesus Maldonado was the offensive MVP and Jonathan Rojas was the defensive MVP.


8th Grade Gold Team:
The Gold team lost to NSMS 48-0.  The game was all North Shore from the start and WAMS simple couldn’t get anything started.  Francisco Reyna led the offense and Ruben Nunez had a sack.  Francisco also recovered a fumble.


8th Grade Black Team:
The Black team took a step back against the North Shore Mustangs Tuesday night in a 38-0 loss.  The Hornets struggled on both sides of the ball all game.  Brice Hernandez did catch a few passes to move the Hornets toward their goal line.  Edgar Rios caused a fumble and Logan Fajardo intercepted a pass near the end of the game.

WAMS Football Game Update - C.E. King

The Woodland Acres football teams played against C.E. King Middle School this Tuesday evening.


7th Grade Gold Team:
The gold team played hard against a more athletic and more physical King team this week.  The offense was able to move the ball through the air but failed to capitalize on field position opportunities.  The defense struggled making stops and keeping King from making the big play.  The Hornets lost 32-0.  Offensive player of the game was Alejandro Garcia and the defensive player was Jacob Garcia.


7th Grade Black Team:
The black team was not up for the contest from the beginning of the game to the end as the Hornets fall 50-0 to King.  The Hornets struggled in every facet of the game and that showed on the scoreboard.

 

Offensively, Bernardo Vasquez did some positive things and Jesus Maldonado led the defensive team.


8th Grade Gold Team:
The gold team lost to a tough game 28-0 this Tuesday night.  Offensively, Leonel Cortazo made a big catch in the third quarter, while Edwin Marquez and Luis Guerrero played hard on defense.


8th Grade Black Team:
The black team pulled out another victory as they continued to build on the momentum they started last week.  Arturo Garcia, Brice Hernandez, and Kevin Costilla all scored on offense, while Antonio Zamora controlled the tempo of the game.  On the defensive side of the ball, Mauricio Perez registered four sacks with contributions from Logan Fajardo and Isaiah Perales as well.

WAMS Football Game Update - Null Middle School

The Woodland Acres football teams played against Null Middle School this Tuesday evening.


7th Grade Gold Team:
The gold team started off on fire as the defense came up with two interceptions, however the offense couldn’t move the ball effectively ending in no points on the scoreboard for WAMS.  Unfortunately, the defenses grinding wasn’t enough to push the Hornets to their first win.  Null won 14-0.  Marcus Fonseca was the offensive MVP and Jaden Valdes was the defensive MVP.


7th Grade Black Team:
The black team played a lackluster second game of the young 2016 season.  The game started off promising as the Hornets score early on a quick strike, but the offense sputtered and the defense was left on the field much too long.  The intensity did pick up late in the game, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit.  Null defeated WAMS 26-6.  Sergio Cruz was the offensive MVP and Matthew Olmeda was the defensive MVP.


8th Grade Gold Team:
The gold team lost to Null 7-12.  The game started off with mistakes that put the Hornets behind the eight ball early.  Francisco Reyna demonstrated leadership in the second half with his late game touchdown.  Both Denicio Castillo and Alejandro Saenz played well at the running back position.  Noel Lezama chalked up a number of tackles for the Hornet defense.  Denicio Castillo and Leonel Cortazo also chipped in defensively.  Francisco Reyna was the offensive MVP and Noel Lezama was the defensive MVP.


8th Grade Black Team:
The black team pulled out a victory in a tight game to Null by a score of 14-12.  The Hornets overcame a slow start to take control midway through the first half.  Once the Hornets were in control they just kept tightening the noose.  The team was bolstered by the strong offensive performances of Arturo Garcia, John Victoria, and Kevin Costilla.  Defensively Oscar Galvan came up with a clutch blocked PAT.  Brice Hernandez, Alfredo Martinez, Antonio Zamora and Logan Fajardo also made contributions on the defense.  Arturo Garcia was the offensive top performer and Oscar Galvan was the defensive.

WAMS Football Game Update - Galena Park Middle

The Woodland Acres football program began their 2016 season against Galena Park Middle School this Tuesday, September 13th.


7th Grade Gold Team:
The Gold Team were rattled by nerves in their first game as Hornets as a prolific number mental errors and turnovers dominated the first half.  The young Hornets managed to relax and find some success in the second half as they managed to keep the Yellowjackets at bay and move the ball offensively.  The Hornets have a great deal of work to do between now and next Tuesday as they fell to GPMS 0-39.  Marcus Fonseca earned offensive MVP and Santos Ramos earned defensive MVP.


7th Grade Black Team:
The Black Team started their 2016 season with a shoot-out against the Yellowjackets.  The offense scored 36 points as they managed to make play after play despite several injuries.  Defensively the Hornets were not quite as sharp as they gave up 41 points and struggled making stops in the red zone.  However, many defensive players showed moments of greatness and the coaching staff is looking forward to building on those moments.  Woodland lost to Galena Park 36-41.  Offensively, Alex Gutierrez earned MVP honors and Adam Soto got the defensive MVP recognition.


8th Grade Gold Team:
The Gold Team lost to GPMS 6-31 in their 2016 inaugural game.  The young Hornets played hard and the coaches saw glimpses of the exceptional team they can become with some sweat, grit, and determination.  Denicio Castillo was the offensive MVP has he was the only Hornet to reach the end zone.  He found the end zone three times during the game, but two scores were called back due to penalties nullifying the points.  Leo Cortazo and Daehan Gonzales made key plays on the defensive side of the ball.  Leonel Cortazo was the defensive MVP.


8th Grade Black Team:
The Black Team defeated the Yellowjackets of GPMS 24-6 earning their first win of the 2016 season.  The entire team gave maximum effort and it showed on the scoreboard.  Antonio Zamora, Mauricio Perez, and Arturo Garcia all scored.  Defensively, Isaiah Perales, Mauricio Perez, Kevin Costilla and John Victoria made key plays that contained the GP offense.  Players of the game were Arturo Garcia on offense and Mauricio Perez on defense.

The WAMS football teams will compete against Null Middle School next week.  The 7th grade teams will be hosting Null and the 8th grade teams will be traveling to Null Middle School.
