Overview of Galena Park ISD Career and Technical Education Early College High School

Early College High Schools (ECHS) is based on the principle that academic rigor, combined with the opportunity to save time and money, is a powerful motivator for students to work hard and meet serious intellectual challenges. Early college high schools blend high school and college in a rigorous yet supportive program, allowing the student to earn a high school diploma and and an associate degree or certificate simultaneously.

 

 

Early College High Schools:

  • provide dual credit courses at no cost to students,
  • offer rigorous instruction and accelerated courses,
  • provide academic and social support services to help students succeed,
  • increase college readiness, and
  • reduce barriers to college access.

 

 

What is an Early College High School (ECHS)?

  • A partnership between Galena Park ISD and San Jacinto College North
  • A school that provides students with up to 60 college credit hours towards a baccalaureate degree at no cost to the students
  • A program that, as defined by the 2005 Texas Legislature, targets students who are at risk of not graduating from high school
  • Gives students a head start on the rest of their lives!

 

 

What Differentiates Early College High School from a Dual Credit Program?

Dual Credit Early College High School
Typically offers between 12 and 30 hours of college credit Provides up to 60 hours of college credit
Students usually begin taking dual credit in the 11th or 12th grade Students will begin taking dual credit in the 9th grade
Support services vary Academic, social, and emotional support programs are required for all students (e.g., tutoring, mentoring, Saturday school, advising)

 

 

Is the Early College High School Model Successful?

The Early College model is gaining national attention due to its success in raising high school graduation and college retention rates for students at risk of not graduating. The program provides student support systems, including tutoring, counseling, and mentoring while reducing barriers to college for students who might not otherwise achieve post-secondary success.

 

 

Benefits to Students

  • Will graduate with both a high school diploma and an Associates of Applied Science degree or a certificate of technology
  • Will have certification so students are ready to enter the workforce upon graduation
  • Will be participants in a smaller school
  • Galena Park ISD will pay for these dual credit classes, textbooks, required supplies and fees
  • Transportation will be provided from both high schools to college campus

 

 

Who Can Attend GPISD CTE EHCS?

  • Students are eligible to apply in the 8th grade and must be enrolled in a GPISD Middle School
  • Students should be able to pass the Reading STAAR at the 1st administration
  • Students must be drug free (Programs leading to professional licenses require background checks and drug screenings)
  • A lottery will be used to select students from those eligible
