Teacher Spotlight

On Friday evening, May 13th, H-E-B honored top educators and school districts from all over the state of Texas. Since 2002, the program has awarded more than $8 million to outstanding public school professionals.

Green Valley's own Hilda Nañez was named the winner of the Rising Star Award for Elementary. Mrs. Nañez earned $5,000 for herself and $5,000 for Green Valley Elementary.

Mrs. Nañez is a bilingual intervention teacher who provides students with extra help in math and reading in both English and Spanish. Mrs. Nañez has received this award because bilingual education is not just a profession for her, it's personal.

Growing up, her family spoke only Spanish. In fourth grade, she was switched to an English-only class and she started to struggle. She remembered how it felt to see her grades go down from straight A's. She wanted to make sure other children didn't have to go through the same thing. She decided she wanted to make a difference and become a bilingual teacher when she grew up.

Congratulations Mrs. Nañez! We are so very proud of you. Thank you for always being such a great representative of Green Valley and GPISD. More importantly, thank you for making a difference and being an inspiration!
