Police Week

Houston Police Academy

Second Grade would like to thank the Houston Police Department and Sergeant Jeanette Perales for letting us participate in Police Week.  The second grade students of Havard Elementary learned about the role of police officers. They got to observe and experience many of the things that police officers do to help keep our community safe. The second grade classes showed their appreciation by presenting the officers with a banner. It was a wonderful experience and we hope to visit again.

Our 5th grade students conducted science investigations in small groups at school over a 4 week period. The purpose of this project was for our students to enhance their knowledge of the scientific method—the plan or process that a scientist follows when conducting an investigation. Understanding and applying the steps of the scientific method is an objective that is tested on the 5th Grade Science STAAR Test. Throughout the school year all 5th grade students have been taught the scientific method and have applied this knowledge in their science class and in the science lab. This project was a great opportunity for our students to work independently and creatively within a small group on understanding and applying the scientific method as they conduct an experiment.

Havard students walked away with some outstanding results! We had 6 finalist ribbons, 9 first place, and 3 second place ribbons earned. The overall Best of Show for the entire district, went to our very own Havard student, Jaelyn Sanchez in 1st grade!! Mrs. Lloyd would like to thank all of her students for working very hard to create such beautiful art work. Every year it is so amazing to see such talent and dedication in the area of the Arts. Congratulations to all our Havard winners! Jaelyn's artwork will now advance and compete for Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion at the HLSR. Her art will also be displayed at the Hayloft Gallery at the HLSR.

Good Luck Jaelyn!

"Tips for a Safe Walk to School"

Parents should identify the safest route, practice it with their children, and teach children to not vary from that route.

Students should walk in groups and not alone. If anything unusual occurs, be sure to immediately report it to a parent or school staff member.

Never accept rides that were not arranged in advance by your parents.

Look left, right, left, behind you and in front of you before you begin crossing the street.

Obey traffic signs and signals.

When you are near the street the street, do not push, shove or chase.

Wear bright colors so drivers can see you more easily.
