Special education refers to a range of services provided to students between the ages of 3 and 21 specifically designed to meet the unique needs of students with a disability. Special education is in place to provide additional services, support, programs, specialized placements or environments to ensure that all students' educational needs are met. These services are provided to qualifying students at no cost to the parents. Students qualifying for special education support have needs that go beyond what is normally offered or received in the regular classroom setting. The range of special education support will vary based on the need of the student.
Once a child qualifies for additional support, an Individual Education Plan/Program (IEP) is then developed for the child. IEPs will include goals, objectives, activities, and any additional supports needed to ensure the child reaches his/her maximum educational potential.
