Sweetness Pays Off, Funds Scholarships

Houston, Texas: The Galena Park/Jacinto City Rotary held its annual cake auction at the Alvin D. Baggett Community Center on April 16, 2014. Local politicians, GPISD employees, GPISD Culinary Arts students, and other community leaders donated more than 50 cakes, pies and cookie trays in order to raise funds for student scholarships. The sweet treats included a number of delectable delights such as white chocolate tres leches and M&M Madness cakes as well as a blissful Boston cream pie. Retired Constable Gary Freeman solicited bid after bid as he auctioned the array of confections to a room full of excited bidders. However, the cake that… well, took the cake, was the cream cheese carrot cake donated by Esmeralda Moya and Nelia Garcia. This wonderful work of culinary excellence brought in the highest bid - $405 by Harris County Pct. 2 Constable Chris Diaz. In all, the Club raised $6,385, which will go a long way in helping award scholarships to area students.

Ernesto Parades, GP/JC Rotary Club president said, “We are celebrating. This was one of our best auctions. We are all very grateful that the community, dignitaries, and the superintendent and employees of GPISD, once again, supported this event. Paula Henney, GP/JC Rotary Secretary, believes this is one of the most inspiring events of the Rotary Club. “It’s a simple thing, really, to bake a cake or a pie. But, the money raised from that act of service helps a student go to college. A small investment in time yields long-lasting benefits to our community. All who donated… all who participated… they are all contributing to the success of our students,” Henney said.
