HEB Excellence in Education Award Semi-Finalist Recognized at MacArthur Elementary

Houston, Texas: Congratulations to HEB Excellence in Education Award semi-finalist, Nancy D. Sanchez of MacArthur Elementary. Ms. Sanchez is a 3rd grade bilingual teacher and is also MacArthur Elementary's teacher of the year. In honor of her outstanding contribution to her students and school, she received a certificate and $250 HEB gift card.

Sanchez graduated from University of Houston- Clear Lake with her bachelor of science degree and then earned her master’s degree in early childhood education in 2009. She is a member of Kappa Delta Pi: Education Honor Society, Alpha Chi: National College Honor Scholarship Society, and received honors in her undergrad years with recognition on the Dean’s List for academic performance.

She credits her parents, who were born and raised in Mexico and only attended school until they reached third grade, as her defining role models for never giving up. Sanchez mentioned, “One image ingrained in my mind was my father, after working twelve hour days in construction, would come home clean-up, eat and then spend the evening with me playing ABC Bingo in English. They mentioned that they saw potential in me and helped me achieve my dream of being a first generation university graduate.”

In addition, Sanchez is a proud product of Galena Park High School, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude. Sanchez also participated in the District’s Home Grown Program in which undergrad students pursuing a degree in education gain valuable experience and mentorship by working in classrooms as an instructional aide. Upon completion of their teaching credentials, Home Grown students are then employed as certified classroom teachers.  As an exceptional future educator, Sanchez has been the distinguished recipient of both the Texas Classroom Teachers Association and the Galena Park Association of Texas Professional Educators scholarships.

“Nancy Sanchez is one of those teachers that when you observe, you lose complete track of time! She is so engaging that her class is continually engaged and excited about learning and participating,” said Lecia Eubanks, MacArthur Principal. “As a bilingual student, she truly understands how her students learn, and she has a wonderful connection with her class. There has not been a time when I left her room that I wasn't thinking ‘Wow!’”

Sanchez is a master teacher who deeply cares about her students and their achievement in life. In her responses to the HEB Excellence in Education application, she stated, “Most people would measure success as getting all the questions on a test correct, or finally learning to ride a bike without someone holding on to the back.  My success is connected to my students’ success. It is not based on test results, but on their growth.  I know I have succeeded when my students are confident enough in their learning to have the courage to take on challenges - when they demonstrate that they will be lifelong learners. That moment usually is observed when I see students making an educational effort outside of the classroom.”

Galena Park ISD is extremely proud and fortunate to have outstanding professional educators such as Ms. Sanchez in the District’s classroom. Sanchez is a shining example of excellence in education.
