North Shore Middle School Newspaper Takes Top Award
Houston, Texas: For the second year in a row, the Columbia Scholastic Press Association announced that the 'Stang Express newspaper of North Shore Middle School was a 2014 Crown Finalist in December 2013; and, once again, the school newspaper was honored with a Gold Crown Award during the 90th Scholastic Convention at Columbia University in New York City.
The Crown Award represents the top 1% of scholastic journalism publications in the nation and is often cited as the student equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize. The 'Stang Express was one of only two middle school newspapers in the nation to win this prestigious award.
This year, 1,236 newspapers, magazines and yearbooks published during the 2012-2013 academic year were eligible for Crown Award judging in the national journalism competition. All entries were judged at Columbia University from December 14-16, 2013 by the Board of Crown Judges. These publications were judged on writing/editing, design, content, concept, photography, art and graphics. Out of all the submissions, only 66 Gold and 90 Silver Crowns were awarded for 2014.
Mr. Ron Burke, the adviser of the 'Stang Express newspaper, has taught journalism (yearbook and newspaper) since 2002. His journalism experience began in high school and continued in college and the U.S. Army where he won several news writing and photography awards during service in Afghanistan and Iraq. In 2005 and again in 2007, The Stampede yearbook staffs, also advised by Mr. Burke, were honored with Silver Crown Awards in national journalism competition. Cindy Mai and Bryant Badie were the Co-Editors-in-Chief of the 'Stang Express newspaper during the 2012-2013 school year. Cindy now attends Debakey High School for Health Professions and Bryant attends North Shore High School. The current Editor-in-Chief, Hailie Russell, along with the current staff, is preparing for this year's round of state UIL journalism competition at The University of Texas at Austin in late April.
