Sam Houston Teacher Named 2014 HEB Excellence in Education Award Semi-Finalist

Houston, Texas: Olga Fula, campus instructional specialist at Sam Houston Elementary, was recently named a semi-finalist in the 2014 HEB Excellence in Education Award.  Fula received a distinctive certificate and a $250 HEB gift card for her entry in the program honoring Texas educators.

An educator for more than 36 years, Fula chose to join the profession because of her mother’s influence, which generated a life-long passion and love for teaching.  Fula stated in her essay for the award, “At an early age in my native Colombia, I found that one of my favorite things to do was “play” teacher.  I used to gather my classmates around me and deliver lessons… just like my teacher and my mom! Later, I used to teach Sunday school at the young age of 12, and by the age of 18 I was teaching high school!”

Fula possesses a Master of Arts in Education degree from the University of Texas at Arlington and a Diploma in Children’s Literature from the University Complutense of Madrid, Spain. She is certified in elementary education, bilingual ESL, and elementary geography, history, and social studies.

She moved to Houston 22 years ago, and has worked primarily at the elementary level. In her current role, Fula is able to assist new and veteran teachers with instruction, always making a positive impact on student achievement.  As a teacher in an instructional specialist position, she believes that a great educator must be inspirational and has to possess the intrinsic human qualities of optimism, accountability, and trustworthiness in order to truly be life changers in this world.

Fula also stated, “In order to be a great, one must inspire greatness out of others. I can truly say that working my whole life in public schools located in areas afflicted by extreme levels of poverty has changed me for the better. One must be eager to impact the students’ lives in a positive way. I have always conveyed to my students that education is a key that has the potential to unlock opportunities and unfathomable levels of success that will improve their lives, their communities, and the future of our country. Inspiring hundreds of students to be first-generation college graduates by giving them hope despite their surroundings and circumstances is the greatest achievement an educator can aspire to have.”

Fula is highly regarded by others at Sam Houston Elementary. Michelle Cavazos, Principal, said, “Ms. Fula is a well-respected individual among her peers.  She has a great determination for the success of the students as well as the teachers.  She goes above and beyond to provide excellent service to our campus.  She has an amazing passion and commitment for education. I am very proud of Ms. Fula.  She is well deserving of such an award!”

GPISD is extremely proud to have teacher leaders who are committed to giving their all to success of students and other educators.
