National Football Foundation Honors Head Coach and Players

Houston, Texas: Accolades continue to follow the North Shore Mustang football program as NSSHS Head Coach, David Aymond, defensive player, Zack Whitley and offensive player, Najee Toran were all honored at the Touchdown Club of Houston’s 34th Annual High School Awards Dinner. The Touchdown Club of Houston is the Houston chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame (NFF).

From over 300 candidates, a committee of coaches and athletic directors narrowed down the list to the top 10 finalists in each nominating category. Aymond, Whitley, and Toran attended the ceremony as top 10 finalists in their respective category. Zack Whitley was selected as the overall Defensive Player of the Year. He joins former Offensive Players of the Year, Trey Hopkins (2009), Bobby Reid (2003), and Cedric Cormier (1996) as recipients of this honor from North Shore. Whitley, however, is the first Mustang to win in the category of Defense. “I wouldn’t have received this without my teammates and my coach pushing me, and just working hard,” Whitley said. Aymond has been a finalist many times, and has won the award twice, in 1996 and 2003.

Whitley was also selected to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl and was a nominee for the Vince Lombardi “Chip off the Old Block” award. He has committed to UCLA and is excited to embark on the next chapter of his football and academic career. “I’ve got to get better… bigger, faster, stronger, mentally tougher. I’m looking forward to joining a group of guys who love to do what I do best. I’ll be joining a new family, just like we have a family here.” Whitley stated.

On a final note, Whitley had a message for other students: he implored, “Stay in your books. Keep your family close, and always listen to what your momma and dad tell you, because without them, this won’t be possible.”
