GPISD Sponsors First Spanish Spelling Bee

Houston, Texas: Galena Park ISD held its first Spanish Spelling Bee on Thursday, January 30, 2014 at the Administration Building Board Room. The competition was open to all students at each high school, Galena Park and North Shore 9th Grade and Senior High Schools.  All three campuses held their own spelling bee contest in November to select the students who would represent their school in the District finals.  The top ten students from all three high schools were selected for the inaugural District Spelling Bee.

The word list for the District finals featured academic content words from the four core areas of math, science, social studies, and language, so students were learning subject matter terms and concepts while practicing for the competition. Students spent months working diligently with their coaches before and after school. A total of 30 students participated in the District finals, and their countless hours of hard work showed as the students took the stage to shine.

First place was awarded to Michelle Quiroz of North Shore Senior High School. Second place winner for the District was Genesis Rodriguez-Perfume of North Shore Senior High School, and Third place went to Daniel Santa of North Shore High School - 9th Grade Center.

“We are so incredibly proud of the rich and rewarding efforts these young men and women have displayed in our first GPISD Spanish Spelling Bee. This was an opportunity for our bilingual students to be exposed to some very difficult words that will ultimately help them in the classroom. The stronger a student’s foundation is in their native language, the better the skills transfer to a new, second language,” said Dr. Wanna Giacona, Executive Director of Special Populations.
