Culinary Arts Night Smells of Success

Houston, Texas: On Friday, January 31, 2014, Galena Park High School hosted “Culinary College Night.”  This annual event brings together students from the Culinary Arts Department's of both Galena Park HIgh and North Shore Senior High Schools, their parents, and representatives of colleges offering culinary arts courses and degrees. Financial aid representatives were also available to answer pertinent questions from students and parents. Culinary Arts students showed off their skills by preparing the tasty refreshments for the event.

Participating colleges included: The Culinary Institute of America; San Jacinto College North Campus; Culinary Institute Alain and Marie Le Noltre; The International Culinary Schools at the Art Institute; Johnson and Wales University, and the University of Houston Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management.

Without a separate Culinary Arts College Night, students wishing to enter this lucrative service industry would not receive the tools needed to make an informed career decision. Galena Park High School provides an annual College Night for all students wishing to receive information on continuing their education when they graduate from the District. This event, however, is typically catered by students from the Galena Park High School Culinary Arts Department and requires them to work while other students are receiving critical information on higher education opportunities.

According to Chef Vasso Espinosa, “We want our Culinary Arts students to have the opportunity to receive specific information relative to their chosen field of study. Having a Culinary Arts College Night gives families a chance to better understand career opportunities, choices in colleges, cost of programs and sources of financial aid. We appreciate the support of our event partners in this worthwhile event."

The District is fortunate to have the leadership of Chef Vasso and Sara Klimitchek, who has organized this successful event each year. Students in the Galena Park High School and North Shore Senior High School programs have attended post-secondary institutions to begin careers in the hospitality industry. This is a wonderful example of the opportunities afforded students in the District relevant programs and dedicated teachers.
