Oh the Places Our Students Will Go!
Houston, Texas: It has been taking place in the elementary schools of Galena Park ISD for well over 20 years, a week long tribute to Theodor Seuss Geisel more commonly known as Dr. Seuss. The one week celebration culminates with Dr. Seuss Day, a day in which various district employees and local officials are invited to the elementary schools in Galena Park ISD to participate in the fun by reading Dr. Seuss books to enthusiastic crowds of elementary students.
Dr. Seuss Day is the culmination of several months of planning and preparation. “We start working on this in December. The students work on artwork for t-shirts and invitations to the community. They also design costumes to fit the theme for that year,” said Audra Willis, Woodland Acres Elementary Librarian.
District employees, community members, and local officials are invited each year to participate in the event by sharing their favorite Dr. Seuss book with eager, and often costumed, students. This year at WAES, a very special guest, U.S. Congressman, Gene Green, made an appearance to take part in the festivities and show his support for education and the importance of reading.
“Reading is a basic skill our students need for their foundation to learn and it is always better when the kids learn things in a fun way,” said Congressmen Gene Green. Congressmen Green has strong ties to education because his wife, Helen, was an algebra teacher for over 26 years.
This year, the Seuss theme was Thing 1 and Thing 2, but the school is already thinking of ideas for next year’s theme. “This is an event we hope never goes away,” said Bianca Benavides, Woodland Acres Elementary Principal. Benavides went on to say, “Each year we try to top ourselves. Just wait till you see what we have in store for next year!” Echoing the excitement and success of this event, Terri Moore, Senior Director for School Administration and Staff Development stated, “Woodland has always had the grandest plans and most outstanding participation for this event in Galena Park.”
Please make plans to join the teachers and students of WAES for this fun-filled event in 2015!
