Anthoula Kelly Jumps to State Championship
Houston, Texas: Galena Park High School's Anthoula Kelly became the Class 4A long jump state champion at the UIL Track & Field State Championships. Held at the University of Texas in Austin, TX, Kelly entered the meet with the second longest jump from the Regional meet, 5 1/4” short of Brett Winnegan of Pearland Dawson.
Since both athletes compete in the same district, they have built a rivalry throughout the season. But Kelly was always on the losing end of the battle. “I haven't beaten him a single time this whole year,” Kelly said. “But I wanted this really bad,” he added.
Just before his second jump of the finals, Kelly's coach gave him a pep talk. “If you believe, just let everything out. Believe in yourself. I believe in you,” Coach Price told him. Let it out he did, jumping a personal best 24' 10 3/4" to clinch the top title, out jumping his Dawson rival by nearly a foot.
Peaking at the perfect time, Anthoula Kelly was ecstatic to finally win, and claim a state title in the process. “I'm feeling awesome right now. This feels like a whole new beginning,” Kelly said.
Kelly is committed to attend Fresno State University and play defensive back for their football team. He will certainly be open to participating in track & field as well.
