Author Collard Sneed III Visits GPISD
Houston, Texas: October 11, 2013 – Children’s author, Sneed B. Collard, III, visited Galena Park ISD Thursday, Oct. 10, 2013 to the delight of audiences at Cloverleaf and Woodland Acres Elementary Schools. Collard has written more than 65 books, most of which are children’s books.
As trained biologist, Sneed fills his books with nature, science, and the environment. “The first 40 or so of my books were all about science, but now I write novels too,” said Collard. “I come up with the ideas for the books from all different sources. I think the world is a fascinating place, and wherever I go, I see things that interest me. Some have to do with science, but many have to do with history or the characters I meet,” stated Collard. He captivated and engaged the students with stories and slides from the animal world.
The author encouraged the students to become writers as well. “There are so many things to write about. Just start with something that happened to you,” he offered. Visiting from his home in Missoula, Montana, Collard added, “This is my first ever visit to Houston. All of you have all kinds of interesting animals and creatures around Texas that you could write about.”
The Language Arts Department met Mr. Collard at a conference and discovered he would be in the Houston area this fall. “Because Mr. Collard’s time was limited, we held a contest to see which of only two campuses would win a visit,” said GPISD Language Arts specialist, Ruth Foster. The elementary students submitted projects, letters, and videos in an attempt to win the visit from the renowned author. “The submissions were so good it was hard to pick the two winners,” remembers Foster. “But what’s amazing about this is, our kids were having fun reading and writing,” she added.
The Language Arts Department hopes to have other authors visit GPISD schools in the future. The excitement generated from this event was a positive and inspiring experience for the students of Cloverleaf and Woodland Acres Elementary Schools.
