GPISD Unveils United Way Campaign
Houston, Texas: October 18, 2013: GPISD hosted a luncheon for campus and department coordinators who will lead the 2013-14 United Way campaign. The District gladly supports one of the most respected non-profit organizations in the country through employee contributions. The campaign will take collections and pledges from Monday, October 21 to Monday, November 18, 2013.
As a District devoted to serving, leading, and learning...with passion, campuses and departments have been challenged to exceed the contributions collected last year: the district goal this year is $35,000. “We are counting on every school to help the United Way of Greater Houston know that GPISD is a district dedicated to its community and families who benefit from many of the services provided through this wonderful organization,” said Paula Henney, Coordinator of Community Relations.
United Way serves the students of Houston through their Education Initiative. This program helps make an impact on students’ success through early childhood education, reading tutors and academic support, mentoring, and out-of-school programs. Others who directly benefit from the generous donations to United Way are military veterans. United Way programs serving honored veterans include employment services, financial education, and counseling. Currently United Way invests $3.5 million in these veteran services.
United Way representative, Jeanette De Los Santos, presented information on United Way’s 2-1-1 Texas Helpline. De Los Santos said, “A frequent call will come when people have lost a job and need to be connected with agencies to help with rent assistance. They may have run through their savings and are about to lose their home. Families may be forced to make tough decisions in terms of rent, food and expensive medication. United Way Helpline is there for families in need.”
GPISD is a proud supporter of United Way and the services they provide to the community and students. The top five contributing campuses and departments will be recognized at the January Board of Trustees meeting.
