Communities in Schools of Southeast Texas, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the social and emotional well-being of students in and out of the school setting; this assistance may range from providing eye-glasses to services for homeless students. Seven campuses currently have Communities in Schools Campus Coordinators and include: Accelerated Center Education; Cloverleaf Elementary; Green Valley Elementary; Cunningham Middle School; North Shore 9th Grade Campus; North Shore Senior High; Galena Park High School. Through a close partnership, Galena Park ISD and Communities in Schools provide dedicated staff to meet the needs of students and families in the district.
The district also co-manages a partnership with Communities in Schools called ACE, Afterschool Center for Education. Funded through the 21st Century Community Learning Centers initiative of the U.S. Department of Education, these centers, each operating from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm, provide a variety of programs afterschool to assist students with homework, include them in engaging activities, and help them make positive choices affecting their lives. The programs make significant strides in supporting students academically and socially; thus, improving their chances of graduating from high school. ACE sites in GPISD are located at: Purple Sage Elementary; Cloverleaf Elementary; Galena Park Middle School, and Woodland Acres Elementary and Middle Schools.
Garcia, a former director of human resources for Dow Chemical, is dedicated to assisting GPISD in making an impact on the lives of students and families through this wonderful partnership.
