Eighth Graders Attend Career Fair, Prepare for High School and Beyond

Houston, Texas: On February 4, 2015, Galena Park ISD sent a parade of buses to the Pasadena Convention Center for the Junior Achievement Career Fair. More than 1,600 GPISD 8th grade students from Cunningham, Galena Park, North Shore and Woodland Acres Middle Schools participated in three breakout sessions where they were introduced to a number of speakers, presentations, and representatives from a variety of career fields available in the Houston area. As these students prepare to enter high school, they are selecting career paths as outlined by House Bill 5 (HB 5).

Passed by the Texas Legislature in 2013, HB 5 restructured the state's graduation requirements to allow students to earn endorsements in specific areas of study: STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), business and industry, public service, arts and humanities and multi-disciplinary professions. Endorsements allow students to focus the classes they take in high school, including their electives, toward their chosen career field. The Junior Achievement Career field trip gave 8th grade students the opportunity to learn about the many different jobs and careers they will have access to as they graduate and potentially pursue a college degree. They also met and talked with representatives from numerous employers such as Chevron Phillips, Pasadena Police Department, San Jacinto College, LyondellBasell, and more. “By giving our students exposure to a wide variety of career options, we hope to empower them to make an educated decision on their personal career path,” said Holli Malloy, Executive Director for Curriculum and Instruction.
