“Forward to the Future” - Galena Park ISD Hosts 13th Annual Multimedia Festival
Houston, Texas: Galena Park ISD held its annual Multimedia Festival on March 5, 2015 at North Shore Senior High School. This year's theme was “Forward to the Future,” which encouraged students to develop higher order thinking skills using creativity tools. The Multimedia Festival gives students an opportunity to showcase their work to a larger community, network with other students who have similar interests, and receive an award for outstanding achievement. Each year hundreds of students participate by entering multimedia projects in various categories: webpage, multimedia slide show, graphics based document, video, and 3D digital modeling. This year approximately 2,400 students participated in the contest and 604 of those students showcased their winning project at the Festival.
“Not only does the GPISD Multimedia Festival celebrate the amazing projects our students create, but it also lets the community witness the outstanding broad scope of technology our teachers are using and teaching,” said Darlene Lovinggood, Senior Director of Technology. An additional benefit of the Multimedia Festival, and technology in general, is that students learn multiple disciplines in one project. For example, “In creating one PowerPoint presentation, students are reading and writing as they research content for their presentation. They are also utilizing art skills when they design the layout and color scheme of each slide,” added Lovinggood. The Multimedia Festival at Galena Park ISD was a resounding success, showcasing what can be accomplished when students and dedicated teachers work together, integrating multimedia into education.
