Pep Rally Celebrates Academic Success
Houston, Texas: Students at Cunningham Middle School participated in an academic pep rally at their school on Friday afternoon. Classes are grouped into teams and compete to see which team shows the most improvement in specific academic areas. The rally was as loud and boisterous as any athletic pep rally. Students cheered and danced gleefully as the winners were announced. After proclaiming the winners of each category, Emmanuel Sanders, NFL wide receiver for the Denver Broncos, encouraged the students to continue to do their best. Sanders was thrilled with the idea of an academic pep rally. “I saw a lot of energy. I saw kids getting excited about getting good grades. I saw a sports atmosphere based around academics… it's cool,” Sanders said. “This school has brought a competitive element to academics. Competition only makes you better. That's brilliant,” he added.
One team won the lion's share of the awards at the pep rally. The team, aptly named the Lions, showed plenty of exuberance when their name was announced multiple times. Sanders commented on the benefits of competition in academics. “The Lions? They nailed it today. Those kids are walking around like they won a world championship at their school. Whereas the other kids who lost - they're motivated to win next time and that's the type of mentality that's important to develop,” Sanders said.
