Students Sample Campus Life
Houston, Texas: This past summer, Texas Tech University provided ten Galena Park High School and ten North Shore Senior High School students the opportunity to attend the week long Raider Life Program at the university in Lubbock, Texas. These talented, college-bound seniors lived in the university dorms and sampled the excitement of life on a college campus. The program was underwritten by Texas Tech University, so all expenses, including airfare, housing, and meals, were provided free of charge to the students.
At the October GPISD Board of Trustees meeting, Dr. Williams and Board member Jeff Miler presented university sponsors, Dr. Paul Frazier and Dr. Heather Martinez, with a certificate of appreciation. The students were invited to attend and show their appreciation as well.
It was an exciting reunion for Dr. Frazier and Dr. Martinez, who are both responsible for community engagement. They were thrilled to see the students once again and learn about the great impact the trip had on each of the students. They beamed with pride at the future Raider students present that night.
Texas Tech University has also secured a $125,000 endowment to provide scholarships to the Texas Tech Raider Life participants during their first year of college at the university. The summer of 2015 will also see another 20 students recruited by both high school counselors to attend the program in June.
A Texas Tech University alumnus, Ken Wallace, GPISD Associate Superintendent for Educational Support, stated, “As a graduate of Texas Tech, I am honored to know the tradition of excellence, service, and accomplishment at the university will continue with the addition of Galena Park ISD students such as these topnotch young men and women from both our high schools.”
Students who participated are: Alyssa Angelle; Aileen Argueta; Catherine Briscoe; Jayair Chatman; Dominguez; Jimmy Duenez; Chantelle Ferguson; Nancy Garcia; Itzel Gonzalez; Camron Gray; Anthony Hernandez; Tommy Lamas; Juan Leija; Isidro Maldonado; Gelma Mevaz; Kiera Nevels-Washington; Kimberly Nunez; Denise Sanchez; Ebony Smith; and Maria Torres.
