Opportunities Through Education
Houston, Texas: Mario Lopez, a 2014 Galena Park High School graduate, participated in the welding program for three years – an experience that led to opportunity. Shortly after graduation Lopez was hired by FLUOR where he is currently a carpenter's helper. He is also on the IIF (Incident and Injury Free) team and assists with new hire orientations. “I am very appreciative for the opportunity I had at Galena Park High School. Fortunately that experience and exposure led to an opportunity to be hired by FLUOR,” Lopez said. As his skill set grows, he will have more opportunities to move up. “Education matters,” said Joe Gaul, welding instructor at GPHS. “This is what we do. We work to prepare these students to become productive citizens and lifelong learners. Earning a high school diploma is only a first step, but it's an important one,” Gaul added.
