GPISD Hosts Retired Educators Luncheon

Houston, Texas: Each year, Galena Park Independent School District looks forward to honoring retired educators in the community with a back to school luncheon. The experience and insight these educators possess is a valuable resource for the District. Their voice in the community is an asset for all. “These precious stakeholders are trailblazers who paved the way for our successes in the past, present, and future,” said Paula Henney, Coordinator for Community Relations.

Approximately 65 retirees attended this year's luncheon held on September 19th, despite inclement weather conditions. They were greeted by Dr. Angi Williams, Superintendent of Schools, and then given valuable information regarding education policies from State Representative Ana Hernandez and Isabel Longoria (State Senator Sylvia Garcia's representative). Following a delicious lunch, the educators were treated to some outstanding entertainment.

Students from various elementary schools recited various poetry selections in dramatic fashion. Each student was the winner of his or her campus prose and poetry contest from the last school year. All pieces were performed from memory, and some students even used props to facilitate the action and emotion of the spoken words. The retired educators were mesmerized by each performance, and were undoubtedly able to reminisce about their days in the schools, and influencing such impressive young minds and talent.
