Galena Park ISD welcomes: “The Creative Mathematics Workshop.”
Houston, Texas: Creative Mathematics is a leading educational consulting company that provides teacher-training workshops all over the United States and Canada featuring Ms. Kim Sutton. Sutton has taught thousands of teachers the joy and excitement of “hands-on” math.
Sutton’s teaching experience includes over 25 years of classroom teaching, time as a regional math specialist and as a university instructor. She has worked with over 200 districts nationally and internationally as a staff development consultant. Joining Sutton are Ms. Barbara Novelli and Mr. Paul Agranoff. Both Novelli and Agranoff have over 20 years of classroom experience. Novelli has spent her time with younger learners while Arganoff has working with students in middle school.
“We basically go through the content of teaching mathematics for the school year. We model best practices and active engagement; there is a lot of manipulative use and a lot of strategies on big ideas in mathematics,” Sutton said. “The participants go through the process of making the same materials they are going to ask their students to make so that they can engage in meaningful mathematics.”
Because the training runs for four days, the instructors are able to provide detailed instruction and answer specific concerns of the participants.
“You have such wonderful mathematical people in your district,” Sutton said. “We also have people here this week that have traveled from as far away as Victoria, British Columbia, Canada and many of them have made the comment that they wish they had the kind of leadership in their district that Galena Park has.”
