GPISD Teachers Receive Regional Scholastic Art & Writing Awards

Houston, Texas: This past Saturday, March 5, 2016, Harris County Department of Education presented the Regional Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Established by Maurice Robinson, founder of Scholastic Books Inc., it is the largest and most prestigious recognition program and source of scholarships for creative teens in the U.S. Works were displayed by the regional 7-12th grade students who advanced to the Silver Key Award level. Thousands of students from public, private, charter, and home sc...hools submit their work each year to this fierce competition. GPISD is proud to announce our five Scholastic awardees for 2016:

  • Mariah Garcia - Cunningham Middle School (Teacher: Jaclyn Campion)
  • Zaria Hamilton - North Shore 9th Grade Center (Charlene Culpepper)
  • Autumn McMillan (2nd picture) - North Shore 9th Grade Center (Teacher: Charlene Culpepper)
  • Sofia Armintor - Galena Park High School (Teacher: Jonalyn Evora)
  • Angelica Torres (3rd picture) - Galena Park High School (Teacher: Jonalyn Evora)

Angelica Torres was also named as one of only five students from the regional Gold Key writing entries to be nominated for the best-in-region for the national American Voices/American Visions awards. These awards are judged nationally for American Voices/American Visions Medals. One of these pieces judged in art and writing will be selected for the national award, so we look forward to hearing from Angelica soon!
