Normandy Crossing Donation Worth Every Penny
Houston, Texas: On Monday, May 23, 2016, the Normandy Crossing Elementary Eagles made a $600 donation to the American Cancer Society. The donation effort was a service project spearheaded by the newly formed Student Council Leadership Team. Each day, the team would hit the halls and classrooms with donation jars to collect pennies from students and teachers.
“I learned a lot about teamwork and the value of helping others instead of yourself,” said Adrian Tamez, Normandy Crossing Elementary Student Council President. “We were all surprised how quickly the pennies added up. Originally we thought we might raise $100,” said Tamez. Irene Benzor, Normandy Crossing Principal said, “Our Student Council has really motivated our campus, led by Clardina M. Jones and Alondra Mejia. They set a new standard for giving and raising awareness.”
“The American Cancer Society and Relay for Life would not be able to do what they do without the community and school support,” said Krista Bahnsen, Community Manager for the American Cancer Society. Normandy Crossing students showed the type of support Galena Park ISD has to offer and that a penny can be worth a pound of compassion.
