Galena Park ISD Showered with Donations
Houston, Texas: Donations rained down at the Galena Park ISD third annual April Shower event on Friday, April 15, 2016 at the Galena Park ISD Administration Building. The event was scheduled to coincide with the SHAC meeting (Student Health Advisory Committee), which allowed an opportunity to share ideas on student health and also served as a drop-off point for donations. Diapers, clothing, and baby food were some of the items the local community donated to the district daycare and Early Headstart families. Every donation is not only greatly needed, but deeply appreciated by the families.
The guest speaker at the April Shower meeting was Dr. Winifred Hamilton, Director of Environmental Health Service for Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Hamilton shared her immense wealth of knowledge about how environmental factors can impact the physical, social and academic development of young children. The topic was well received with the recent news about high lead content in drinking water in some American cities. The audience voiced concerns about Houston area environmental issues, the issues that schools can face with environmental hazards, and how to be safe at home to ensure environmental impacts are kept to a minimum.
