North Shore Elementary Volunteer Receives Prestigious Award

Houston, Texas: On Friday, September 15, Mrs. Carol Ann Youens, North Shore Elementary volunteer, was recognized in Austin for being selected as a 2017 Heroes for Children by the State Board of Education!

Mrs. Youens was one of 15 honorees selected to win this prestigious volunteer award. She received a plaque recognizing her service to North Shore Elementary. Her name is also engraved on a plaque that is permanently displayed at the Texas Education Agency.

Mrs. Youens is the second member of her family to earn the Heroes for Children award, as her late husband Alfred received the award last year.

Eighteen years ago, the Youens decided to "pay it forward" and began volunteering for our wonderful school district. For the past 14 years, Mrs. Youens has focused her work on assisting first and second grade students with basic reading skills.

Many volunteers have referred to Mrs. Youens as "the mother of the NSE volunteers."

Congratulations, Mrs. Youens!
