GPISD Readiness and Emergency Management for Schools
The Galena Park Independent School District is proud to announce that we have been awarded a REMS grant from the US Department of Education.

In October 2011, the Galena Park Independent School District was awarded the Readiness and Emergency Management for Schools Grant from the US Department of Education. The grant supports the improvement of comprehensive plans for any school emergency or crisis and is designed to serve all schools in the District, including private non-profit schools.
The GPISD Department of Security and Emergency Management, in partnership with representatives from Fire and Emergency Services, Galena Park/Jacinto City Fire and Emergency Department, Houston Fire Department, Harris County Office of Emergency Management, Harris County Office of Risk Management (ORM), Harris County Department of Education, and other First Responders will work together to improve the District's comprehensive, "all hazards" disaster plan and enhance it's response and recovery procedures. This project also enables the District to provide training to campus personell
The Readiness and Emergency Preparedness for Schools aims to accomplish the following goals:
- Increase knowledge of school emergency response procedures by developing building specific plans that incorporate the threats, hazards, and vulnerabilities of each school site.
- Provide extensive training to staff and students.
- Foster parent and community awareness and involvement.
- Conduct emergency drills and exercises.
- Develop Emergency Preparedness Web-Based Application accessible to all first responders with key information from every school.
The U.S. Department of Education's Office of Safe Schools and Heathly Students(OSHS) manages the Readiness and Emergency Management for Schools (REMS) grant competition. The REMS grant program provides funds for local education agencies (LEAs or school districts) to improve and strengthen their emergency management plans.
