Moses Austin (1761-1821)
Born in Connecticut, Moses Austin moved to the Missouri territory and established a lead mine and banks to supply and finance settlers in the west. He first proposed a settlement of 300 families in Texas to the Spanish governor of Texas in 1820. Austin died before his dream could be realized but his son, Stephen F. Austin, followed through on his father's plan.
