Nathan Hale (1755-1776)
An American soldier in the Revolution, Nathan Hale volunteered to spy on the British on Long Island. he was captured and hung on September 22, 1776. His last words, paraphrased from Addison's play, Cato, were, "I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country." These words quickly became an inspiration for Patriots during the Revolution and remain part of the American story of the quest for independence.
