Neil Armstrong (1930- )
Born and raised in Ohio, Neil Armstrong earned degrees from Purdue University and the University of Southern California, served in the United States Navy as a fighter pilot during the Korean War and worked in Aeronautical research before joining NASA (National Aeronautics and Speace Administration) in 1962. He was the first civilian astronaut accepted. He commanded the Apollo 11, completed the first manned lunar landing in history, and was the first man to walk on the moon on July 20, 1969. He worked with NASA, taught engineering at the University of Cincinnati, served on the boards of major corporations, and was active in the commission which explored the Challenger disaster in 1986.
