Galena Park ISD students will have a few extra weeks for rest and relaxation this summer as they will report to school on Aug. 27 under the 2007-2008 academic calendar approved by the Board of Trustees on Dec. 11.
The State of Texas changed school start date to the fourth Monday in August during the 79th Legislative Session. Under the current law, there are no longer provisions for local school districts to receive a waiver to start school earlier than the state mandated date.
“This is the best possible calendar that we could come up with for students, teachers and parents considering the mandate we were given by the State Legislature,” said Dr. Mark Henry, superintendent of schools. “There is no change in the number of instructional days. All students will attend school for 187 days as in previous years, despite the fact the Galena Park ISD is starting school several weeks later than we have in the past.”
While students return to school on Aug. 27, teachers will return to work earlier. Inservice for new teachers will take place from Aug. 13-17 and all teachers will report Aug. 20-24 for staff development and teacher workdays. The last day of school for students will be Friday, May 30 while Saturday, May 31 is a teacher workday.
Holidays for students and staff during 2007-2008 include:
Sept. 3 – Labor Day
Nov. 21-23 – Thanksgiving
Dec. 20 - Jan. 2 – Winter Break
Jan. 21 – Martin Luther King Day
March 17-21 – Spring Break
May 26 (Memorial Day)
Additional student holidays for staff development are Nov. 9 and March 24.
