Garza Named Principal of Districtís Newest School

Ofelia Garza, current principal at Cloverleaf Elementary, was named principal of the district’s newest elementary school during the Dec. 11 Board of Education meeting. She will begin her new responsibilities in January 2007.
Garza began her career in Galena Park ISD in 1980 as a PE instructor at Cloverleaf Elementary and stayed in that position until she became a second grade bilingual teacher in 1993. Garza became assistant principal at MacArthur Elementary in 1997 and then principal at Cloverleaf in 2001.
Lee Brown, current assistant principal at Cloverleaf Elementary, was named principal at Cloverleaf and will begin serving in that capacity in January 2007. Brown began his career in Galena Park ISD as a teacher at Jacinto City Elementary in 1990. He then taught at Woodland Acres Middle School, Galena Park Middle School and Galena Park High School before being named assistant principal at Cloverleaf in 1999. Brown became the assistant principal at Normandy Crossing Elementary in 2004 and then returned to Cloverleaf as assistant principal in 2006.
The district’s newest campus, which was named Sam Houston Elementary by the Board of Trustees during the Dec. 11 meeting, will open in August 2007. Sam Houston Elementary sits on an 18-acre site on the Beltway 8 frontage road between Woodforest and Interstate 10. ††††††††††† Sam Houston Elementary, the district’s 15th elementary school, will relieve overcrowding at Cloverleaf, Cimarron and North Shore Elementary Schools. The construction cost of this campus is $13.057 million and the school will serve 850 students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. The new school utilizes a design similar to Freedom Elementary with modifications to make this new campus unique. In addition to the extra circulation designed to enhance parent pickup in the front of the school, the design also includes parking for approximately 130 cars, three open commons areas, space for future growth, an indoor multipurpose area, stage, cafeteria and food service area and computer and science labs.
