Galena Park ISD hires experienced educator as interim superintendent
........ The Galena Park ISD board of trustees announced that Dr. Michael W. Say has been hired as the interim superintendent of schools. A respected educator, Say served 19 years as the superintendent for Humble ISD. After retiring in 2001, he began working as a consultant. The Galena Park ISD board of trustees selected Say based on his expertise in education and strong leadership abilities.
........ “Dr. Say has an excellent track record and will be helpful and supportive during this transition,” Jeff Miller, board president, said.
........ “Galena Park has a great reputation,” Say said. “I look forward to maintaining that reputation until a new superintendent is hired,” Say said.
........ A native of Port Arthur, Say graduated from Lamar State College of Technology with a secondary education degree. He completed his masters and doctoral degrees at the University of Houston.
........ Say joined Humble ISD in 1982. Under his leadership, Humble ISD passed four bond referendums, built 15 new schools, made significant additions to 10 schools and renovated schools district wide.
........ During his tenure, Say was named Region IV superintendent of the year, Houston/Gulf Coast superintendent of the year and he went on to become a finalist for the Texas Superintendent of the Year award. He was also awarded Citizen of the Year by the Humble Area Chamber of Commerce and he was presented the Distinguished Alumni award from the University of Houston College of Education.
........ Before joining Humble ISD, Say was a Houston ISD administrator. He served in several capacities over a seven-year period including superintendent for instruction and support services. Say taught high school and worked as a director for the Region IV Service Center. He spent three years with the Orange County Education Research and Curriculum Development Center, which later became Region V Education Service Center.
........ Say was also an adjunct faculty member for the University of Houston College of Education. He taught part-time for the Texas Southern University’s College of Education and for Stephen F. Austin State University. Say has authored various papers, articles and publications on school finance, applications of the computer in education, long-range planning, parent involvement, accountability and public school operations.
........ Say remains active in various professional organizations including the International Rotary Club, the American Education Research Association, Phi Delta Kappa, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the American Association of School Administrators and the Texas Association for School Administrators.
........ Say’s wife, Elaine, grew up in Jacinto City and is a Galena Park High School graduate. She is currently an administrator in the Spring Independent School District. They have three daughters and four grandchildren.
