Former First Lady Barbara Bush and U.S. Congressman Gene Green were two of the many guest readers to take part in “Read Across America” day at Woodland Acres Elementary on Friday, March 2. The event celebrated the 50th birthday of Dr. Seuss’s “Cat in the Hat” character as well as the 10th anniversary of the “Read Across America” campaign.
Other guest readers to take part in the festivities at Woodland Acres Middle School on March 2 were Commissioner Sylvia Garcia, members of the Galena Park ISD Board of Trustees, as well as district administrators, community members and representatives from a variety of local businesses. The celebration began with a parade of students, many who were dressed as their favorite Dr. Seuss character, throughout the campus.

Barbara Bush reads “If I Ran the Zoo” as her dog, Sadie, looks on. Mrs. Bush read to the entire student body. Pictures from the book were projected onto a large screen while she read.
