WILLIAMSON ELEMENTARY WELCOMES STUDENTS

Briana Allen (left) and Kayla Rouzan (right), third grade students at Williamson Elementary, are all smiles on the first day of school. Dr. Shirley J. Williamson Elementary (formerly Freedom Elementary), opened its doors to 550 students on Aug. 25 – the first day of school. The district’s total enrollment for the first day of school of the 2008-2009 school year was 19,546 students.
Galena Park ISD trustees voted to honor former Superintendent of Schools and Commissioner of Education Dr. Shirley J. Williamson (Neeley) by renaming Freedom Elementary in her honor.
Even though the name of the school has changed, the colors and mascot remain. The mascot is the Freedom Lions and the colors are purple and gold. Freedom Elementary, which opened in 2005, earned the title of Exemplary status from the Texas Education Agency for the 2007-2008 school year.
The official renaming ceremony of Dr. Shirley J. Williamson Elementary is scheduled for Sept. 23.
