State Superintendent of Mississippi visits GPISD

Dr. Hank Bounds, State Superintendent of Education for Mississippi, talked at length with Galena Park ISD administrators and principals on Wednesday, Dec. 3 before touring North Shore Senior High School and Galena Park High School.
Dr. Bounds praised district administrators and principals for their hard work and dedication to student success. He cited the fact that GPISD is one of only two districts in Texas with an enrollment of 20,000 students or more to earn a Recognized Status and have all campuses and the district meet AYP standards.
“Many people would say that a district like Galena Park could not be successful since it is a high poverty district with 75 percent of its students receiving free or reduced lunch,” he said. “You have proven them all wrong. What you have accomplished is nothing short of amazing.”
He then thanked district employees for their support of Pascagoula School District in Mississippi following Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Dr. Bounds served as superintendent of the Pascagoula School District for four years and had just taken over his new responsibilities as State Superintendent of Education when the storm hit. Galena Park students and employees raised $25,987.54 in relief for Pascagoula School District.
