Montiel honored by North Channel Area Chamber of Commerce

Gabriela Montiel, a senior at Galena Park High School, was recognized as the Galena Park ISD Student of the Month during the Feb. 1 North Area Channel Chamber of Commerce luncheon in the Monument Room of San Jacinto College North.
Montiel was recently notified that she is a recipient of a Presidential Scholarship from Johnson & Wales University. She will soon take an Advance Standing Program Exam which would help her earn college credits and is worth up to $30,000 of her tuition and would allow her to earn an associates degree in just one year or her bachelor’s degree in just three years.
“Gabbi” as she is known around Galena Park High is a student in the culinary arts program under the direction of Vasso Espinosa. Students in the program receive real-life experience by preparing food and serving customers in Le Restaurant, which is open to the public each Friday and by catering school district and community events.
Gabbi carries a 3.992 GPA on a 4.5 point scale and ranks 42nd in her graduating class of 472. She is an active member of the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America and finds time in her busy schedule to help teach Life Skills students and remain active in her church.
Her love for cooking began at home and she still tries to cook for her family as often as possible.
“Gabby is a well-rounded young lady with an incredible work ethic. Her specialty is any dish involving chicken. She just loves to cook!” said her culinary arts instructor Vasso Espinosa
