North Shore’s Lauren Flores in finals of Clutch City Shootout

Lauren Flores, point guard for the North Shore Lady Mustangs basketball team, has qualified for the finals of the 2008 Clutch City Shootout to be held at halftime of the Houston Rockets vs. Denver Nuggets game on Sunday, March 2 at the Toyota Center.
The Clutch City Shootout is a 3-point shooting contest for area students who play on their school’s freshman, sophomore, junior varsity, and varsity basketball teams. North Shore Senior High is guaranteed to receive at least $3,000 from the program since the school of the winning contest will receive $7,000 while the school of the runner-up will receive $3,000.
Flores, a junior at North Shore Senior High, advanced to the finals by competing in the semifinal round held on Jan. 5 at halftime of the Rockets vs. New York Knicks contest.
Flores is an integral part of the Lady Mustangs fast start to the 2007-2008 basketball season. As of January 7, the Lady Mustangs have raced to a 19-3 overall record with a 5-0 mark in District 22-5A competition. The 5’7” point guard is averaging 21 points per game as well as 5.3 assists and 6.2 rebounds per game.
“She is an all-around great player,” said head coach Allison Campbell. “We were very excited to watch her play when she was in middle school, that’s how good she is. Lauren is a great shooter and I’m not surprised at all that she excelled in this 3-point shooting competition. She is a very unselfish player who will do anything to help her team win.”
Flores said that she was not intimidated at all to compete at halftime during the Rockets game in the Toyota Center.
“I just told myself ‘it’s just a shot, go out there and shoot.’ I was just a little nervous at first but once I hit the first couple of shots and got into a rhythm all of that went away,” Flores said.  “Shooting in the Toyota Center was a lot of fun, as was hearing the crowd cheer as the shots starting falling. I’m really looking forward to the next round.”
