Galena Park ISD will host an appreciation day for Dr. Gerald D. Cobb at the campus named in his honor on Saturday, December 8 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Cobb Sixth grade campus is located at 6722 Uvalde Road.

Former Commissioner of Education and former GPISD Superintendent Dr. Shirley J. Neeley will share stories about Dr. Cobb’s years in education during the event as will current GPISD Superintendent Dr. Mark Henry, Trustee Wayne Oquin and many other family members and friends, including Jerry Cook, Stu Stewart, Frank Pickens and Johnnie Rountree.
Dr. Cobb, who played basketball at Baylor University, began his career in education as a basketball coach in Mineral Wells in 1950. He served as coach in Beaumont ISD from 1952-1954 and then accepted the position of head basketball coach at Galena Park High School in 1954. He remained at Galena Park High School until 1960 when he accepted the position of business manager for the district. He was then named an assistant superintendent in 1966 and was named superintendent in 1970. Dr. Cobb served 17 years as superintendent in Galena Park ISD.
He began his association with Woodforest National Bank as the founding director and vice chairman of the board in 1980. He served as chairman of the board and CEO from 1986-1990 and currently serves as chairman of the board, a position he has held since 1991.
