GPISD Campuses Honored in Just for The Kids Higher Performing List

Nine Galena Park ISD campuses have been honored by the National Center for Educational Achievement (NCEA) in the 2009 Just for the Kids Higher Performing list.
Schools honored were: Cloverleaf Elementary, Jacinto City Elementary, Havard Elementary and Pyburn Elementary for performance in third grade math; Normandy Crossing Elementary for performance in fifth grade science; Tice Elementary for performance in third grade reading and fourth grade reading and math; Woodland Acres Elementary for performance in third grade reading; Woodland Acres Middle School for math performance, and Galena Park High School for math performance.
The GPISD campuses are in select company as NCEA analysis deemed 19 percent of public schools in Texas to be higher performing.

The standard by which these schools are identified varies with respect to the state accountability system.  Instead of determining a rating based upon the percent of students meeting standard on the TAKS, the NCEA uses the following standards to identify its schools:

  1. Student growth from one year to the next in upper elementary, middle, and high school.
  2. In the lower elementary grades, the NCEA analysis was based upon the students’ actual scale scores on the test, not just whether they passed.
  3. A second measure was used to qualify high schools- the percentage of students reaching NCEA’s college and career readiness benchmark which, also did not rely on the state’s passing standard.

The 2009 Just for the Kids Higher Performing list is based on data from 2007 to 2009.
